📌May 1 marks the commemoration of the arrival of South Asians to the Caribbean. Brought over under the false pretense of a brighter future. While many Indo-Caribbeans celebrate a Caribbean and South Asian fusion culture —we take a moment to remember the truth behind our ancestors arrival. Colonization and racism enabled and fueled the birth of slavery and indentureship.

Today we celebrate a unique culture but remember the history, pain, and experiences of survival our ancestors were subject to.

📌NEW FEATURE: Yazmeen Kanji’s ‘One Day’ is the First Film Dedicated to the Muslim Indo Caribbean Woman’s Experience

Women’s HERstory Month is a celebration of pioneers and leaders. Filmmmaker Yazmeen Kanji 🇨🇦🇬🇾is just that. Kanji directed the first short film to showcase the experiences of Muslim Indo Caribbean women. —a group whose stories are never told in mainstream media. “One Day” .shortfilm follows Adeela, who is playbed by Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia actress Rebecca Ablack 🇨🇦🇬🇾

The audience sees Adeela searching to find her voice, navigate a hyphenated identity (a lived experiences many Caribbean women can relate to) while going through the every day struggles of being a teenager.

As a Muslim Indo Caribbean woman Kanji is passionate about storytelling and community.

“𝙄 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮.”

Ablack took on the role of Adeela finding the character to be a fresh, relatable, and realistic representation of what young Muslim Indo Caribbean women experience.

On this eve of Holi 2025 we reminisce about the different customs and symbols used in celebration. Holi is the Hindu “festival of colors.” It marks new beginnings with the arrival of Spring and also symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations often include throwing colored powder and water. Thousands of Indo Caribbeans partake in such celebrations every year.

In “Celebration” visual artist Indra Persad Milowe 🇹🇹 taps into her South Asian roots with the use of jharokhas.
