The bench is above reproach – but not above frustration.

As the hearing over the admissibility of DNA evidence in suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann’s case nears its end, Suffolk County Court Judge Timothy Mazzei has grown increasingly impatient.

The 850 Northwell lab workers say they want a contract that mirrors the one that their 20,000 other unionized colleagues have.

Despite working the same job under the same title, the benefits they receive are vastly different, lab workers told the Press while picketing outside the New Hyde Park Core Labs facility last week.

Earlier in the spring, after 18 years as head of Long Island Cares, Paule Pachter announced plans to step down from the leadership position.

“I’m really at that age,” Pachter said in the interview with the Press. “With all the challenges we face in the next three and a half years, it is time for someone younger to take over.”

The vital food bank is facing unprecedented challenges. Pachter said that if the SNAP program is reduced, LI Cares could lose $2 million a year. He said he has been meeting with the Island’s congressional delegation, asking that SNAP be saved.

“Long Island is not a bastion of affluence,” he said. “It’s important we take the politics out of hunger.”

Since February, more than 1,400 detained immigrants have passed through Nassau County jail cells.

State law prohibits police officers from detaining individuals for violating immigration law. Only federal agents are capable of detaining such accused offenders.

“Despite what Bruce Blakeman may think, Nassau County cannot ignore settled state law,” Rubin Danberg-Biggs, the lead counsel on this case, said. “Local police do not have the authority to act as ICE agents — and they don’t need to.”
