Jennie Jerome was born in Brooklyn in 1854, the daughter of financier Leonard Jerome. Raised between New York and Europe, she developed the confidence, intelligence, and independence that later made her a striking figure in British high society.

At 20, she married Lord Randolph Churchill and became Lady Randolph Churchill. Celebrated for her beauty, Jennie was also socially skilled and politically connected. She used those connections to support her son during the early stages of his military and public career.

During the Second Boer War, Jennie helped raise funds for the hospital ship Maine, traveled to South Africa, supported its humanitarian mission, and comforted wounded soldiers.

Benjamin Franklin never served as President of the United States.

Yet his portrait appears on the $100 bill—one of the most recognizable pieces of currency in the world.

Born in Boston on January 17, 1706, Franklin was the fifteenth of seventeen children. His family could not afford to give him a long formal education, so he left school at the age of ten. Two years later, he became an apprentice at his older brother’s printing shop.

Franklin was an avid reader and largely educated himself. At seventeen, he left Boston for Philadelphia, where he arrived with little money and found work as a printer. That young apprentice would eventually become a writer, publisher, scientist, inventor, diplomat, lawmaker, and postmaster.

Franklin helped shape the country without ever occupying the White House. He signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, represented the American cause abroad, and helped negotiate peace with Great Britain after the Revolutionary War.

Today, Franklin is one of only two people featured on regularly issued U.S. banknotes who never became president. The other is Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, whose portrait appears on the $10 bill.

Perhaps Franklin’s place on the $100 bill carries a message larger than money itself:

When she was dedicated in 1886, she didn’t have the iconic sea-green color we recognize today. Because her outer surface is made of copper, she originally appeared reddish-brown—much like a new American penny. 🪙

Over the following decades, exposure to the air and rain around New York Harbor caused the copper to oxidize. This natural process gradually formed a protective green coating known as a patina.

By the early 1900s, much of her familiar green color had appeared. And that patina does more than make Lady Liberty recognizable—it also helps protect the copper underneath from further corrosion.
