Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of depression that can develop after giving birth. It is more intense and longer-lasting than the common “baby blues.”
Common signs include:
Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
Feeling overwhelmed or constantly anxious
Losing interest in things you normally enjoy
Difficulty bonding with the baby
Sleeping or eating much more or less than usual
Feeling worthless, guilty, or like a bad parent
Difficulty concentrating
Thoughts of hurting yourself or the baby
It can happen during the weeks or months after birth, and it isn't a sign of being a bad mother. Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, stress, and other factors can contribute.
Treatment works and may include therapy, practical support, medication, or a combination.
If someone has thoughts of su***de, harming the baby, or feels detached from reality/hears or sees things others don't, that's an emergency and they should get immediate medical help.
If you're asking because you or someone you know may be experiencing it, tell me what's happening and I can help you understand whether it sounds like postpartum depression.
