I was sent to a small town in rural Pennsylvania for work.
One motel. One room. Three nights alone.
The clerk told me not to open my door for anyone at night.
I thought she was just being weird.
She wasn't.
Night one β footsteps stopped outside my door.
Knocked twice. Nobody there.
Night two β same dark green pickup. Lights off.
Tapping on my window. Something dragged down the glass.
The empty room next to mine suddenly unlocked.
My bathroom window started moving.
Something on the other side pushed back.
Police found the screen pulled off my window.
Fresh pry marks on my door.
And under my bed β a torn piece of newspaper.
My room number. My license plate. Written in pen.
They had been watching me long before I checked in.
