In the heart of Jamaica Plain stands one of Boston’s most unusual homes—the “Dragon House” at 17 Cranston Street. Built in the 1870s by two Scottish brothers, this 12-sided wonder is made from three connected hexagonal sections with a six-sided turret on top.

There are no right angles inside, and the bold paint, pointed windows, and elaborate trim make it feel more like a fairy tale than a typical Victorian. It’s a private home, not a landmark—but it’s impossible to miss if you’re nearby.

My wife wanted a new medicine cabinet. So naturally I started destroying the plaster wall. Now the medicine cabinet is in, shelving cleats are up, and I’m getting ready to tile. I’m using Schluter DITRA under the tile but I just took out the old linoleum, and this is what I’m dealing with.

This old green material looks glued down to the wood subfloor but it is NOT in good condition. The black material seems to be the bottom layer of the green board, at least I hope that’s what it is and not mold. Some of it is in better shape than other parts.

Anyway - you are me - what do you do now? And we are DIYing it. And yes. I know I have to take the toilet out.

While my house isn’t real old, 1947, it has had some additions done in the past. Not sure if they were professionally done but the imperfections are abundant. I built this floating cabinet for the tv electronics and discovered just how bowed this wall is. The floor on the right is the original flooring. The left is an addition where the exterior wall was taken out. It was carpeted when I bought the house. I had new pine wood put in and stained to match as close as possible. It is higher as the subfloor was level with the old floor.

Bought the table on Marketplace. It has 4 pull out seat/storage cubes. Extra seating & just the right height for the granddaughters! They love hiding toys & blankets in there !

Just bought a new home and I always wanted an entryway table, however this spot right here is narrow. Do you guys think I can still put one? Also the door opens towards that side so I’m afraid it will hit the table when opened. Ideas please 🙏

Hello! Need help! I asked contractor to replace 90s tile with leftover marble from bathroom. I think this looks too heavy.. looking for ways to lighten it up. Too high for mantel. Don’t want to do a floor piece because it will take up too much space. Add sconces above. Trim it out? Any ideas would be great. Thank you!

This is my house. I love it so much! We recently repainted it. We have owned it for 9 years and have done quite a few updates.

Update:

I still haven’t been able to find the exact date it was built, but I found through the deeds that the land was purchased by Michael McCloskey from William Bridges in 1869 to be paid in 3 payments, to be completed by July 1st 1870. I am assuming it was built in 1870. I do know it was shown complete in a town land map dated 1879.

The house on left side (not shown) is from the 1840’s and I have been told housed both Union and Confederate armies and our property housed the campgrounds for the army. (I have not been able to document this). I do know Mount Sterling changed hands between the Union and the Confederacy 12 times during the war. The Confederacy burned our courthouse in 1863. (We are 3 blocks away).

Michael and Bridget McCloskey owned a grocery store downtown a few blocks away. Bridget passed away in 1885 and is buried at St. Thomas Cemetery. I found through newspapers that he had several lawsuits in the 1880’s mainly due to finances and had passed away by 1891. There was an economic depression during this time that may have contributed to this. This makes sense as right around this time my property was divided and the yellow house to the right that you can see was built by 1905 on what was part of my property.

I have gotten a lot more information today after going to the courthouse, filling in the gaps of all of the owners. The longest stretch in one family was 67 years.

Lots of fun finding out information!

This is the wallpaper in the entry and staircase of the 1865 farmhouse I just bought. The walls are original lathe and plaster and some spots have stains and cracks. I really like this wallpaper and want to replace after I repair the walls but it’s VERY old! Can anyone suggest something similar they’ve seen for sale?
