BYGONE DAYS!

We're on Owey Island here, a little gem off the north-west coast of County Donegal, accessible only by boat. The island has no electricity, gas or running water but was once home to over 140 islanders, had its own primary school (just one teacher for all ages) and a post office. The last two families, the McGonagles and Oโ€™Donnells, left in 1977. There are still houses on the island, some of which are being renovated, most having been inherited by those whose families once lived permanently on the island, but they're only inhabited during the summer months and although they do have fridges and cookers, those are run by gas cylinders. No electricity means no internet, no TV, in fact no brain-overloading modern-day distractions at all. Lighting is supplied by gas or candlelight. Life on the island definitely isn't for those who love their creature comforts but if 'off grid' is what you seek, then Owey is the place for you. You can't take your car, you won't need it anyway, but there's a ferry service run by Dan the Ferryman. That's Errigal mountain in the distance. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Robin Hoodโ€™s Bay, North Yorkshire ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿก๐ŸŒŠ

Looking down the steep village lane toward the wide open bay.

Red-roofed cottages, dramatic cliffs, and the wild, rugged beauty of the Yorkshire coast.

A proper gem tucked between moor and sea.

TASSAGH VIADUCT & BEETLING MILL!

The Tassagh Viaduct is a railway bridge near Tassagh in County Armagh. Built in 1910 to span the Callan River Valley, the railway line was closed in 1976, the tracks removed and Tassagh Viaduct became a listed building. The big square building in the picture was used as a beetling mill in the linen industry. Beetling was the last stage in linen production where beetles (heavy wooden hammers/posts) would fall down on the cloth to give it a shiny surface and close the weave.

We get many of our sayings from the milling industry, 'Pop Goes the Weasel' for example. The weasel was a small wooden device, part of a clock reel for measuring yarn. The reel released pressure and that forced the weasel up, making it pop. A nursery rhyme owes its origin to this. I've known it since I was a child but if you don't have it where you come from, here's a verse...

Half a pound of tuppenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

Tuppence was a coin worth two pence and pronounced tuppence.

Shuttle bus is another one. The flying shuttle in a loom goes back and forwards time and time again, like a shuttle bus. ๐Ÿฅฐ

I have seen the morning burning golden
On the mountain in the skies,
Aching with the feeling
And the freedom
Of an eagle when she flies.
