You could hear it before you could see it.
That little melody drifting down the street.
The ice cream truck was coming.
And suddenly, every kid disappeared from whatever they were doing.
Bikes were abandoned in driveways. Basketball games paused. Someone would yell toward the house, β€œCan I have some money?” and then sprint toward the sound as fast as their legs could carry them.
You didn't need an app to tell you where the truck was.
You didn't need a notification.
You just listened.
Summer afternoons had a rhythm of their own. The pavement was warm under your sneakers. The grass smelled freshly cut. Sprinklers clicked back and forth across front lawns, cicadas buzzed in the trees, and the neighborhood seemed to slow down in the heat.
Then came the most important decision of the afternoon:
What are you getting?
A popsicle?
A frozen chocolate treat?
An ice cream sandwich?
Maybe you stood there counting the coins in your hand, hoping you had enough for exactly what you wanted.
And if you didn't?
You learned a very important childhood lesson about budgeting.
The funny thing is, the ice cream itself probably wasn't extraordinary.
What made it special was the anticipation.
For a few minutes, the whole neighborhood seemed to come together. Kids from different houses stood in the same little line, comparing treats and laughing before scattering back into the afternoon.
Today, the sound of an ice cream truck can bring back an entire summer in seconds.
Not because the ice cream was better.
Because we were kids waiting for it.
What was your go-to ice cream truck treat when you were growing up?

There was a time when a kid could walk into a tiny Queens candy store with a few coins and feel like they owned the whole afternoon.
It was a chilly October Saturday in 1967, and the bell above the door gave a little jingle every time someone came in. The place smelled like chocolate, penny candy, newspapers, and coffee drifting over from the counter in back. A wooden rack held comic books, while glass jars were packed with colorful sweets.
Outside, mothers hurried home with shopping bags, buses groaned along the avenue, and apartment windows glowed above the storefronts. Inside, nobody was rushing. The owner knew the neighborhood kids by name and somehow always remembered what they liked.
It wasn't fancy. It wasn't famous.
But for a few coins, you could leave that store with a candy bar, a comic book, and the feeling that Saturday belonged entirely to you.

Do you remember a little neighborhood store like this?
