What happens when you go silent with a narcissist depends on the stage of the relationship: 1. You still live together: Your silence disrupts their access to your emotions. They may provoke, criticize, guilt-trip, love-bomb, or manufacture conflict to force a reaction and regain control. 2. You’ve been separated for 30 days or more: Once they realize you are no longer chasing, explaining, or defending yourself, they may test the door through hoovering, indirect messages, emergencies, nostalgia, jealousy, or mutual contacts. 3. The relationship has permanently ended: After divorce or a long-term breakup, your silence communicates that their psychological access to you is over. They may rewrite the history, blame you, perform indifference, or attempt to reappear—but your continued silence protects your reality, nervous system, and recovery. Silence is not about punishing the narcissist. It is about ending the cycle in which every provocation receives your energy.
