Since I wrote the Crux on Friday, I was given two beautiful hats that my daughters made in Sunday school for Father’s Day, got to talk with six teenagers about Jesus’ call to love your enemies, and got comped a lunch which turned to early dinner as I watched a waitress navigate some internal conflict and was just unable to do her job well. Since Friday, me and millions of other people lived wonderfully ordinary lives, trying to recover from surgeries, care for sick loved ones, teach children to be kind human beings and work to make ends meet.

At the same time, millions of our neighbors rallied at over 2000 No Kings Day protests in response to Trump’s DC Military parade, open conflict is breaking out between Iran and Israel, Gaza went dark, and a man who I can find preaching sermons on the internet overseas saw fit to assassinate a Minnesota lawmaker and her spouse and attempt to kill another and his spouse. And tragically, a bystander was killed in Salt Lake City as “peacekeepers” accidentally shot an acclaimed Samoan fashion designer as they fired at a suspected mass shooter loading an AR-15 in the large crowd.

A lot happened — and now lawmakers are returning to get ready to pass a bill that could gut healthcare and benefits for the poorest people in our country, non-citizens languish in squalid detention facilities, and Trump is threatening increased ICE enforcement.

With all of that and more on our hearts, in our heads, and notifying us on the phones in our hands, what would Jesus have us to do?

Yesterday I wrote, “Violence wounds us. For those who do it. For those it is done to. For those who witness it. Every day, I see so much wounding.’And it is this trauma that warps us. Like cheap wood left out in the rain. I believe we must resist being misshapen. Yet, it is so difficult.

Yesterday, there was more violence as the state of Israel continues to massacre Palestinian women, children and men at staggering rates, starving innocent people – even opening fire on European diplomats walking through occupied territory.

Yesterday, the United States launched the largest ever bombardment from an aircraft carrier on Somalia and continues to attack Yemen where women and children pay the price.

And yesterday, in retaliation for the genocide being enacted by the state of Israel and enabled by the United States and Western powers Washington, DC, two Israeli embassy staff were shot and killed by Elias Rodriguez.

And so the tussle for our heart strings, purse strings, and attention begins in the wee hours of the morning while our House of Representatives passes a bill that will cut life-saving benefits for the elderly, the disabled, children, and the poor while transferring billions of dollars in resources towards the wealthy and those invested in the military industrial complex.

Who shall be mourned? Who shall be humanized? Who is worthy of our attention, our tears, our collective grief? Conversely, who is worthy of our condemnation? Who is worthy of our aggression? Who deserves violence? I believe the answer to the first question is everyone and the answer to the next is no one.

You don't have to be an immigration lawyer to be an effective advocate. You don't have to be an inactive bystander when ICE comes into your community. You can choose love, justice and be fiercely kind in a world committed to cruelty. This webinar gave a window into how to do that and people with experience and expertise to show us how.

Last week, I listened to an interview with poet, professor and former Panera Bread employee, Ocean Vuong.

His honesty about anger, rage, grief, sadness, pain and his desperate desire to be kind in a world that is cruel and unrelenting resonated with me in ways things haven’t in a while. His vulnerability left me wanting to feel seen, known and be fiercely kind in a world that seems familiar with cruelty – and committed to it. His next book is on my “wish list” and his old ones are in my cart.
