The 2022 BET Awards aired live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 26. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson for the second year in a row, the ceremony – billed as “culture’s biggest night” – celebrated “black excellence”.

Doja Cat led the nominations with six, while Drake and Ari Lennox followed close behind with four each. Sean “Diddy” Combs was set to receive the lifetime achievement award, which will include the artist himself on stage for a star-studded performance featuring Mary J. Blige, Nas, Busta Rhymes and more. (You can find the full list of winners here.)

Lizzo, sparkling like a golden disco ball, kicked off the show with her performance of “About Damn Time.” Following this, Henson gave his opening monologue, during which she criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, lamenting that women now have fewer rights than guns. “It’s high time we talked about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman,” said the Empire said the star. “It’s a sad day in America. A weapon that can take lives has more rights than a woman who can give life if she wants to. She was just one of several artists to approach loss of women’s right to safe abortions.

Beyond the political statements, the stars took to the stage to stun with their performances, with surprises in many sets. Jack Harlow released Brandy, with whom he had fun earlier in the year. And in an instant that put the audience on their feet, Mariah Carey is out sing during Latto’s set.

Many of the presenters, performers and winners called to action after Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade

There were also moments of joy. Brandy did a surprise performance with Jack Harlow, and Mariah Carey hit impressive high notes in a surprise performance with Latto.

Sean “Diddy” Combs received a lifetime achievement award. He was celebrated by a host of other artists and former collaborators like Mary J. Blige and Kanye West.

Will Smith, who fueled Oscar controversy by slapping Chris Rock on stage shortly before winning the Best Actor Oscar, won the BET Award for Best Actor on Sunday.

Ben Affleck The 10-year-old just did a little silly thing…jumping into the driver’s seat of a VERY expensive Lamborghini, and with the engine running, he put it into reverse and he made contact with another car.

Well and Jennifer Lopez went with Samuel Garner Affleck Sunday at 777 Exotics, a luxury car rental dealership in Los Angeles. They were all looking at different cars when Ben let Samuel get into the driver’s seat of a yellow Lambo.

Apparently Samuel or someone else had the engine running…the boy put the Lambo into reverse and it seems that’s when it made contact with the white BMW.

From the video, it appears that the Lambo’s passenger side rear bumper made contact with the BMW’s front wheel and possibly the fender.

It’s hard to tell from the photos, but Sam jumped out of the Lambo and went to the back to inspect for any damage.

A rep for Ben tells TMZ … there was no damage and all is well.

A 777 Exotics employee told us there was no accident and the cars were just parked very close together – which is true – but that doesn’t explain why Samuel would come out and inspect the 2 vehicles.

06/27/2022

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic “Elvis” rocked theaters with estimated weekend ticket sales of $30.5 million, but — in a box office rarity — “Elvis tied “Top Gun: Maverick,” which also grossed $30.5 million, for No. 1 in theaters.

The final numbers on Monday, once Sunday’s receipts are compiled, will determine which film ultimately won over the weekend. With a high degree of accuracy, studios can forecast Sunday sales based on Friday and Saturday activity, although the numbers often vary by a few hundred thousand dollars.

But for now, the unlikely pair of “Elvis” and “Maverick” are locked in a dance (if you prefer “Elvis”) or a standoff (if you prefer “Maverick”). The fact that it was so close was due to both a better-than-expected opening for “Elvis” and remarkably strong continued sales for “Top Gun: Maverick.” The “Top Gun” sequel hit $1 billion at the global box office in its fifth week of release.

“Elvis,” starring newcomer Austin Butler as Presley, entered the weekend with expectations closer to $25 million. Among recent musical biopics, a $30.5 million debut album puts the King ahead of Elton John’s beat (“Rocketman” launched with $25.7 million in 2019) but not in the same class as Freddie Mercury. (“Bohemian Rhapsody” opened with $51.1 million in 2018).

“I’m less concerned about who’s number one and who’s number two, and I’m more concerned that we’ve reached that big number given that that audience has been the slowest to get back into theaters. “, said Jeff Goldstein, head of distribution for Warner. Brothers.

About 60% of the “Elvis” audience was over 35. Older audiences have been among the most hesitant to return to theaters during the pandemic, but that’s changing — in part, Goldstein noted, because of “Top Gun,” which brought fans back to the 1986 original.

“Elvis,” which cost around $85 million to make, was propelled by strong reviews (78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), good word of mouth (an A-CinemaScore) and a glitzy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. . It added $20 million overseas over the weekend.

“Elvis” ranks as Luhrmann’s second-best opener after 2013’s “The Great Gatsby” ($50.1 million). Luhrmann was about to start production in Australia when, at an indelible moment during the pandemic, star Tom Hanks tested positive for COVID-19.

“‘Elvis’ was a dicey proposition: the music is dated, the character isn’t directly familiar, and the lead actor hasn’t proven himself on the big screen,” wrote David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research in a newsletter. “But critics and the public are reacting. It’s Baz Luhrmann’s show, a show of music, dance and s*x appeal — it’s a success.

Meanwhile, “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to soar. The Paramount Pictures film became the first release of 2022 to hit $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, and the first starring Tom Cruise to do so.

In its fifth weekend of release, “Maverick” fell just 32% domestically to bring its total to $521.7 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters. It continues to climb in the record books, ranking 15th all-time in the country, without taking inflation into account. Internationally, the “Top Gun” sequel added another $44.5 million.

The ‘Elvis’/’Top Gun’ showdown – along with Blumhouse’s new horror version ‘The Black Phone’ and big remnants in Pixar’s ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and ‘Lightyear’ – made one of the more competitive and busy, movie theater weekends in the age of the pandemic.

Most studios are celebrating again, although Disney’s “Lightyear” fell 65% in its second weekend. After opening softly last week, the “Toy Story” spin-off has grossed $17.7 million domestically, dropping to fifth place. “Lightyear,” which has grossed $152 million worldwide to date, will soon face more competition for families with the Friday release of “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

The counterprogramming came from Universal Pictures’ “The Black Phone,” the supernatural thriller directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke as a runaway killer. The Blumhouse production received strong reviews (84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) for a better-than-expected $23.4 million launch.

After two weeks at the top spot, Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” raked in $26.4 million, slipping to third place. It has now surpassed $300 million domestically and grossed $746.7 million worldwide.

A much smaller scale film, “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”, debuted to good sales in a limited release. The warmly-received stop-motion animated film, in which Jenny Slate voices a one-inch-tall mollusk with a googly eye, debuted with $169,606 across six screens, for a per-screen average of $28,267.

Estimated Friday-Sunday ticket sales at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final national figures will be released on Monday.

1. (Tie) “Elvis,” $30.5 million.

1. (Tie) “Top Gun: Maverick,” $30.5 million.

06/27/2022

Ross Chastain, then a driver for the now defunct Chip Ganassi Racing, had his best weekend of the season last year with a second-place finish at the Nashville Superspeedway.

It was a great story at the time, but one that didn’t impact the season as a whole or even the future of this franchise. CGR announced the sale of its assets to the current team of Chastain not even two weeks later; he only had one top five the rest of the way; he missed the playoffs and finished 20th in the standings.

“My world is pretty much the opposite of where I was at this stage of life last year and from my career to the performance we’ve put in all this season, where we finished second and it was the biggest thing that happened to us all year,” Chastain said after earning his eighth top five of the season in The Sunday ally 400.

That number more than doubles his pre-season career total, and he did it in just 17 races.

“Now we’re finishing fifth and that’s exactly what we’re supposed to do,” Chastain said. “We had the fifth place car and we had to finish fifth with it. We don’t need to be wrecked trying to get third place and we don’t need to run ninth with it, we have to run fifth. For me, that checks so many boxes and makes me just as excited that we performed tonight exactly where we should have.

Chastain set the series on fire in 2022, as he and Trackhouse as a whole seemingly came out of nowhere to become legitimate title contenders with three wins and 11 top five finishes between him and teammate Daniel Suárez. To go from a season of chasing moral victories driving a lame organization to arguably the favorite to win it all while knocking on the door of a regular-season championship is a rarity in a sport with perennial heavyweights like Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske make Championship 4 reservations season after season.

What a difference one year – or 17 – makes.

“Ross, 12, is like ‘What? You could be top of the Cup Series points standings in a few weeks or anytime? That’s crazy,'” Chastain, 29, said. points and everything goes as planned. … but yeah, little Ross is like ‘What in the world is going on? This can’t be real.

“I just want to be competitive. I want to go fast and get more points than everyone else and everything will work out, but of course that’s a goal (to win the regular season championship).

Part of Chastain’s success has been that fast car crew chief Phil Surgen has offloaded the truck most weekends, but the No. 1 team also continues to make strong late-race calls .

There was extreme variance in pit strategies at the final race caution, with Surgen choosing to take Chastain to pit road for a full set of tyres. While it didn’t work for every team that went this route – and race winner Chase Elliott opted to stay to maintain track position, which clearly did – it was a game-changer for the No. 1.

“It was amazing,” Chastain said. “You never want to be the last car with old tires and as soon as we got into turn 1 we had grip and I got to Cole’s (Custer) rear bumper from (turn) 2 and I pushed him as long as I could I wanted to try to tandem and help him and help me selfishly hooked up found some clean air and kind of stabbed my way there and held back a few guys out there on the last lap to hold onto fifth place. It was just a bit where the seas parted in Turns 1 and 2 for us on fresh tyres.

“When we pulled into the pits I thought we were about to win Nashville, then every time we left pit road on the access road I saw how many cars were left outside and I didn’t know how many cars were one lap away or anything but I knew it was more than I wanted to. I wanted to start sixth and instead I was 13th.

“But you just played your best hand and Phil Surgen and our group will be fine to fold tonight knowing we made a good call to win the race. It just didn’t work.

Although we’ve seen some teams come and go throughout the year, Trackhouse has maintained their stature better than most.

Don’t expect that to change next weekend either at Road America for the third road race of the season. Two of the team’s three wins this season came earlier this year at Circuit of The Americas and Sonoma Raceway.

And 12-year-old Ross Chastain probably wouldn’t believe it either.

06/27/2022

Pride marches across the United States took on new gravity on Sunday as progressives feared conservative Supreme Court justices who voted for reverse Roe v. Wade could now overrule protections of other rights, including same-s*x marriage and same-s*x intimacy.

The annual parades and rallies in major cities such as New York and San Francisco came two days after Judge Clarence Thomas, in a concurring opinion to the court’s decision that dismissed Roe, called on the court to reverse historical decisions who established these same rights.

Sunday’s events also took place as the LGBTQ movement reels from recent legislative setbacks, including laws that limit classroom discussions about s*xual orientation and gender identity. Florida Parental Rights in Education Act for example, has turned into a national powder keg.

Planned Parenthood, one of the nation’s leading reproductive healthcare providers, kicked off this year’s New York City Pride march. People dressed in rainbow colors and waving Planned Parenthood flags lined Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, cheering as the first wave of marchers descended the street.

“Today it seems monumental, especially considering what happened on Roe v. Wade,” said Jonathan D**o, who attended New York City Pride with a friend. “We see a lot of signs. Women’s rights are in jeopardy, and it’s going to affect LGBT people.

“Looks like they’re coming for same-s*x marriage, intimacy and everything — adoption, even,” D**o added. “That’s why it’s really important to come back in person, to be together and to support each other at this time.”

Sunny Zelewski, 20, from Pennsylvania who was in the crowd, said she was encouraged that several northeastern states have books laws that allow abortions, but she is concerned about the future of reproductive freedom in her home state, which she described as “completely unknown”.

The upcoming gubernatorial race adds more uncertainty to that. In a statement Friday, incendiary Republican candidate Doug Mastriano celebrated that Roe had been “rightfully relegated to the ash heap of history.”

“We have no idea how that’s going to tip,” Zelewski said of Pennsylvania, which went for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election and then Joe Biden in 2020. “I could be mom one day, and it’s super terrifying to know that if something bad happened to me and I didn’t want or couldn’t afford to take care of a child, I would have to now.”

Tere Martínez, 56, a playwright and educator who attended Sunday’s parade with her partner, said the festivities were “bittersweet”, reminding her that the political gains won by the progressive movement over decades are now under threat by a conservative supermajority in the Supreme Court.

Martínez said she trusts young people and the rising generation of progressive political advocates, adding in part, “I don’t know if the march is as powerful as it once was, but that’s why we have to constantly working and thinking of new ways to engage politicians and change their minds.”

In his concurring opinion, Thomas asked the court to “reconsider” the decisions in Griswold v. Connecticut, Lawrence c. Texas and Oberfell v. Hodges, writing that his colleagues should reject the doctrine of “substantive due process” and arguing that they have “a duty to ‘correct the error’ established in these precedents.”

All three cases marked civil rights milestones. Griswold established the right for married couples to purchase and use contraceptives, Lawrence established the right for consenting adults to engage in same-s*x intimacy, and Obergefell established the right for same-s*x couples to marry.

In the court’s majority opinion, however, Judge Samuel Alito seemed to suggest that other protections were not necessarily at risk, writing that “we emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right .

“Nothing in this notice should be construed as casting doubt on precedents that do not relate to abortion,” Alito wrote. Judge Brett Kavanaugh echoed that reasoning, writing in his concurring opinion that the decision to overturn Roe “does not threaten or cast doubt” on precedents such as Griswold and Obergefell.

The court’s liberal bloc – Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan – expressed deep skepticism about the claim, however, writing bluntly in their dissenting opinion: “No one should be convinced that this majority in finished with his work.”

Jude Barnhart, an 18-year-old from Maryland who identifies as transgender and non-binary, protested outside the Supreme Court early Sunday. Barnhart, who uses the pronouns they/them, said in an interview that they believe conservative High Court judges will now seek to erode the judicial foundation that supports same-s*x marriage and other LGBTQ rights.

“I have a wonderful girlfriend,” Barnhart said. “I was talking to my girlfriend, like, ‘What if we can’t get married?’ … They’re not going to stop regulating our bodies. They’re going to regulate who’s in our beds. They’re going to regulate who we marry. They’re going to regulate what we can put in our bodies to keep us from getting pregnant. “

“Things probably won’t get better,” Barnhart said, “but I can at least remain hopeful that they will.”

Kiara Wright, 16, a high school student who lives in Virginia and attended Sunday’s protest outside the Supreme Court, said she was “deeply scared and disappointed with what American society has become.”

Wright, who was born in South Africa and whose mother came of age under racial apartheid, said she feared what the court’s dramatic rightward shift could mean for her life as a “bis*xual, multiracial woman in America today”.

She said that although she was not yet of legal voting age in the United States, she felt motivated to “do my part”. She plans to canvass voters and do phone banking ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Wright – standing amid a crowd of protesters chanting slogans such as “My body, my choice” – added that she believes the tumultuous moment could be a national “turning point”.
