Every year on May 21st, UNESCO leads the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, emphasising both the diversity of cultures and the importance of intercultural dialogue in fostering peace and sustainable development. According to UNESCO data, the cultural and creative sector accounts for more than 48 million jobs globally - nearly half of which are held by women. Moreover, the majority of the world's major conflicts have a cultural dimension, so intercultural conversation is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development.
Today, we take this opportunity to celebrate our local film industry as they are an important driver of intercultural dialogue and cultural preservation through their moving, visual archive of the world.
Karma Deki is a well-known Bhutanese filmmaker, in fact the first Bhutanese female filmmaker, who is known for her powerful storytelling and focus on marginalised communities. As an independent filmmaker, she firmly believes in the transformative potential of filmmakers to foster deeper understanding of cultural diversity, encourage intercultural dialogue, challenge stereotypes, nurture empathy, and empower marginalised voices. She said that films visually explore the intricacies of cultural identity, present nuanced portrayals of diverse communities, often champion stories that may not find mainstream representation, and engage viewers on an emotional level. “When working on films like ‘Dangphu’, ‘Kushuthara’ sequel, and the TV series ‘My Life My Journey’, I worked closely with indigenous communities,” she said, “Together, we co-create narratives that accurately represent their perspectives and experiences. By doing so, we also safeguard these valuable transitions for future generations.”
Karma said that she has gained a profound understanding of how filmmakers can use language and storytelling to connect with a community’s way of life, their nature, culture and antiques. “The visual symbolism and metaphors in our storytelling help us evoke a deeper understanding and emotional resonance with our audience,” she said, “It’s a journey that continues to deepen my appreciation for the power of language and storytelling in capturing the essence of a community's heritage.”
