Tswalu’s butterfly diversity is remarkable for a semi-arid area in the southern Kalahari, especially as butterflies are known to be extremely habitat and host plant specific. Their survival also depends on the correct microclimate being present, especially during dry spells. This week, the chance discovery of a Pale Ciliate Blue by the Tswalu Foundation’s Dylan Smith increased the reserve’s butterfly species count to 83!

"Tswalu's mosaic of mountains, plains and sand dunes provides the necessary habitat diversity that sustains the rich diversity of resident butterflies," says Reinier Terblanche, who has been doing butterfly research on the reserve for 10 years.

In celebration of World Nature Conservation Day, Reinier writes about the excitement and significance of adding a new species to Tswalu's list: https://tswalu.com/how-a-chance-discovery-took-tswalus-butterfly-species-count-up-to-83/

Rangers are the lifeblood of Africa's conservation efforts. On World Ranger Day, take a moment with us to remember all the courageous men and women across Africa who are committed to conserving our natural heritage, often risking their lives to protect endangered species and stop illegal activities that threaten ecosystems and biodiversity.

And respect and gratitude to our teams on the ground, working very much behind the scenes to protect everything that finds sanctuary on Tswalu. We salute you.

One of Santa’s little helpers gone astray? No, just one of the less common antelope species, its reddish-brown coat helping it to blend into the Kalahari environment. Adults of the species develop backward-curving horns and a black-and-white face mask - darker and more distinct in males. Any guesses? Comment below.

Biodiversity accounts for the variety and variability of life on earth, from genes to entire ecosystems. The conservation of biodiversity and the structures that support it are at the core of of Tswalu’s vision of restoration.

“Biodiversity greatly adds to the resilience of ecosystems, and as is so often the case, we don’t necessarily know which components are the essential ones until it is too late.”

The above is an extract from a new story, written for us by Marcus Westberg, which explains why declining biodiversity potentially spells disaster for life as we know it.

A rock monitor lizard (Varanus albigularis) is typically spotted on the trunk of a tree or sunning itself on a rocky ledge. On the ground, there is a good chance that it will hiss and lash with its powerful tail if it feels threatened - predators include large birds of prey, like a Martial eagle.

As travellers become more mindful of the impact of their spend, accountability and transparency in the conservation space has become more critical than ever before. With this in mind, Tswalu has released its first impact statement in collaboration with The Long Run. Read more: https://tswalu.com/tswalu-releases-its-first-impact-statement/

This practical tool uses actual figures so that our guests can see exactly how much of their spend is allocated to conservation. Being transparent about where the money goes will hopefully provide our guests with a better understanding of what it costs to operate sustainably and how nature and people are positively impacted.

Trackers contribute significantly not only to the safari experience but also add huge value to the conservation and wildlife management work carried out on the reserve.

Thanks to the Tracker Academy, which runs a training campus on Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, tracking has been elevated to its rightful status as a profession. The Tracker Academy trains disadvantaged rural people in traditional skills of wildlife tracking.

UPCYCLE TO RECYLE | We love that the bins used for recycling and managing waste in our staff villages are made from recycled materials!

By making use of discarded farm infrastructure, including old corrugated iron sheets and angle iron, these good-looking waste management bins have made it much easier for everyone to play their part and become more conscious consumers.

Dry thunderstorms are typical in the Kalahari in summer. Dry grass is rich in fuel, susceptible to any spark, and ready to ignite with a single lightning strike. Nature dictated once again with lightning strikes being the primary cause of a few wildfires this past season.

In the latest edition of the Wildlife Journal, Prince Ngomane writes about the impact of wild fires and the importance of summer rain, from when it falls to where it falls. Read the full story: https://tswalu.com/wildlife-journal-summer-2023/summer-rains-and-wildfires-in-the-kalahari/

About the Tswalu Wildlife Journal:
Our bi-annual Wildlife Journal is packed with stories penned by the guiding team describing life on the reserve and reflecting the radical changes that the Kalahari undergoes from one season to the next.

A giraffe calf has an abrupt entry into the world, and is able to stand up and follow its mother soon after birth as she moves around in search of browsing. Our guides report that there are currently several young calves of varying ages to be seen. They start eating leaves and ruminating from about 4 months, but remain reliant on their mother’s milk for up to 9-12 months.

Can you guess how old this giraffe calf is? Let us know in the comments.

Dung beetles play an important role in the ecosystem, decomposing waste as part of the circle of life. Getting off the vehicle to examine the vital contribution of the small things to the big picture adds a different dimension to a safari and a deeper understanding of the Kalahari's ecology.

Did you know that Cape ground squirrels are omnivores?

Along with roots, bulbs and seeds, they also feed on insects. They don’t need to drink water, because they get sufficient moisture from their food sources.
