On this day in history, April 26, 1937, Spanish nationalists called on N**i and Italian Fascist forces to bomb the Basque town of Guernica. The horrors of the bombing led Pablo Picasso to create perhaps his greatest work, “Guernica”: a massive painting powerfully representing the horrors of war.

Restored and digitized, GUERNICA, a short film by Alain Resnais and Robert Hessens, spotlights details of the painting over a frenzied and disturbing score.

THE FIRST YEAR is a jubilant record of the 12 months following the election of Chile’s first socialist president, Salvador Allende. Director Patricio Guzmán travels the country, meeting workers who no longer have to answer to the caprices of bosses, fishermen hoping to be freed from predatory capitalist middlemen, and Indigenous people rising up to reclaim their land.

Icarus Films is pleased to announce the acquisition of exclusive North American distribution rights for : THE HELL OF AUSCHWITZ: MAUS BY ART SPIEGELMAN, directed by Pauline Horovitz.

With humor and finesse, the film explores Art Spiegelman's comic book masterpiece, MAUS, and its accomplishment of a double revolution: bringing the Holocaust into comics and, with it, mainstream culture, without betraying historical rigor; and establishing comics as an art of reality. He also gave a voice to the "second generation" of children of Holocaust survivors, who were buckling under the weight of a tragedy they had not experienced directly. First a bookstore phenomenon with a whiff of scandal, then an international bestseller awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1992, MAUS quickly became a classic. Horovitz discovered in this seminal work at the age of 13 the truth that her own family kept from her, along with its "before" and "after" in the light of her journey as a granddaughter of survivors. (Text adapted from Arte France)

Featuring: Art Spiegelman, historians Annette Wieviorka and Tal Bruttmann, Joann Sfar, Ole Frahm, Tania de Montaigne, and Emmanuel Guibert.
