60 years ago today, October 29th 1965, Moroccan revolutionary Ben Barka was abducted on a Paris street and murdered; his body was never found, nor were the culprits positively identified.

By documenting Barka's life, accomplishments, and dedication to his country and people, Simone Bitton's documentary BEN BARKA: THE MOROCCAN EQUATION unearths the story of one of Morocco's greatest and most controversial political figures—and answers the question, "Who wanted him dead?"

"This superb portrait of the anti-colonial militant Ben Barka serves to remind us of what the Morocco of today owes him." —Les Inrockuptibles

Acquisition news ‼️📣

Icarus Films proudly announces the acquisition of North American distribution rights for FIUME O MORTE! directed by Igor Bezinović, selected as Croatia’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, and shortlisted for the European Film Awards, Best Feature Documentary category. The deal was negotiated with Bojana Maric from Lightdox.

Winner of both the Tiger Award and the Fipresci prize at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival, and also winner for best film, director, and screenplay at the Adriatic Film & TV Awards, Croatian director Igor Bezinović’s inventive hybrid film is a defiantly punk direct-action history lesson, deadly serious yet hilariously surreal.

In 1919, the Italian poet, dandy, and glorifier of war Gabriele D’Annunzio occupied the city of Fiume. The citizens of Fiume (now Croatia’s Rijeka) retell and reinterpret the 16-month occupation of their city, regarded as one of the most bizarre military sieges of all time.

FIUME O MORTE! depicts D’Annunzio as a vain, image-obsessed trailblazer of political showmanship (which should ring a bell or two), adapting the performative propaganda employed during the siege to create a descent into chaos that is shockingly prescient.

“A novel approach to historical drama, realized with daring, skill, and sardonic wit.” —Richard Brody, The New Yorker

“CRITIC’S PICK! AN EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY…This sprawling, continually engrossing assemblage from Göran Hugo Olsson (THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE) is built entirely from material shown on Swedish public television. Its subject is not only the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but also how the news was mediated for Swedish viewers by a dominant broadcaster with a mandate for impartiality.” —Ben Kenigsberg, The New York Times

Israel Palestine on Swedish Television 1958–1989 is the definitive cinematic account of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through unique footage

From the director of BELOW THE CLOUDS,Gianfranco Rosi's EL SICARIO, ROOM 164 is set in an anonymous motel room on the U.S./Mexico border, as a Ciudad Juarez hitman speaks to the camera. With his face obscured by a black mesh hood, he tells us his story inside the very room he once used to hold andtorture kidnapped victims.

"His unadorned mixture of boastfulness, self-flagellation, and willingness to underline Mexican and U.S. bureaucrats' complicity with the bloodthirsty agenda of the "narcos" possesses a raw power that needs no embellishment."—Cineaste

In tracing the roots of one of the preeminent humanitarian issues of our time — through the same intimate lens the filmmaker first encountered it — Olsson has produced one of the most complete cinematic documents about a political conflict in recent memory.” —Siddhant Adlakha on Göran Hugo Olsson’s ISRAEL PALESTINE ON SWEDISH TV 1958–1989 for Truthdig
