This fuzzy mouth is slurping up algae in slow motion. In real time, it’s just two seconds.
The creature is an Aeolosoma, a tiny polka-dotted worm feeding on boat-shaped algae. They’re common in water and even show up in plant trays.
Aeolosoma glide with slipper-like mouths, sucking in food as they go. Hair-like structures around the mouth help them move and guide food inward.
I used to think they ate everything by accident, but after years of watching, I’m sure they can control what goes in.
This one was devouring diatoms so fast I had to film it in slow motion. Tracking a one-centimeter worm at 400x magnification is wild.

Meet this little gem 🐚✨ one of several juvenile horseshoe crabs we sampled during our study on how these ancient creatures are distributed across space and time in the northern Indian River Lagoon. The water was murky and choppy, but the site was teeming with juveniles! Compared to our July collection, many of these crabs were just a bit bigger growth in action!

Some waterfalls whisper instead of roar. Hidden behind hills, wrapped in moss and hush, they wait for those who listen not with ears, but with instinct. Listen to the wind. To the hush of water. To the quiet thrill that something untamed lies just beyond the bend. 📸 Follow for more off-the-map wonders waiting to be found.
