After three sons, my husband finally put a baby girl in my arms — I was crying with joy until the doctor asked to speak to me alone.
After our third son was born, I packed away the tiny pink blanket I'd bought years earlier.
I adored my boys.
But my husband, David, knew I'd always dreamed of having a daughter.
Then, seventeen years later, my phone rang at 6:20 a.m.
David was at the hospital.
"Come quickly. And don't bring the boys."
When I arrived, he was standing outside the maternity ward.
Holding a newborn girl.

Inside was a DNA report.
I recognized David's name.
Probability of paternity: 0%.
I stared at him.
"Then why did he say she's ours?"
The doctor turned the page.
There was another result.
This one had my name on it.
Probability of biological relationship: 99.8%.
My hands went numb.
"That's impossible. I'm 54."
"I know."
"Who is her mother?"
The doctor hesitated.
Before he could continue, someone began pounding on the office door
