Today, I went to see the most soulful show I’ve ever seen. Hands down.
I don’t think a show has ever got me so emotional before.
The experience brought me back to those times back in Belgium when I was dreaming of living in New York.
Public Enemy, the Spraycan Art book, Do The Right Thing, the jerseys, Saturday Night Fever, the tagged down subways, the boomboxes, The Warriors…
The Italian families living in Brooklyn and me complaining all the time about being in the “only” Italian family without a New York connection; “Come on! An uncle, an aunt, a cousin, something! Nonna, Zia, there’s gotta be someone over there” Nope…
And of course The Lordz of Brooklyn! A massive inspiration as a teenager. “Look! They’re like us!” Their swag, the “Mama Mia” dropped in the lyrics, The Verrazano Boyz… “How f**kin’ cool is that!?”
And that freakin’ Saturday Nigh Fever beat! Today I saw the MPC they used to make All in The Family as well many others pieces of history.
If you’re in New York, you have to see it! If you’re not, you have to come and see it.
And If you would have told me back then, that one day I’ll shake hand I wouldn’t have not believed it, actually that’s a lie, I would have say “can’t wait!”
Dreams do come true…
Thank you mum. I wish I could call you to tell you what happened today…
