We have a pipe that's joined with a rubber cuff that's putting out a noxious smell. We hired a plumber to replace it with something better and they just replaced it with a new rubber cuff that did nothing for the smell. What should we ask for to actually fix the problem?

Three times I have painstakingly assembled and disassembled this shower valve, I cannot get these threads to not leak. I have been following the teflon tape directions to the T, making sure to wrap clockwise, 3-4 laps, smoothing everything out, but no luck. All four threaded connections drip
