𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱!

According to the latest poverty statistics, World Poverty Statistics 2024, approximately 9.2% of the global population, or about 700 million people, live in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is defined as living on less than $1.90 per day.

To say poverty rate is worrisome is an understatement, as Nigeria boast of over 41℅ of her dwellers already living and would live below the international poverty line by the end of 2025(World Bank)

Would actually prefer exclaiming - EWO! 😱😢
'Ewo' is an exclamatory word in Igbo speaking part of Nigeria(Eastern region) that conventionally captures the gobsmack poverty state of the nation. But in this context, it is a mix, for we have seen the momentum building towards a worsening poverty crisis, with millions of families struggling to meet basic needs like food, shelter, and healthcare.😭

At the moment, Nigeria faces the harsh reality of high unemployment rate, inflation, and inadequate social services, all contributing to its growing poverty numbers; with its burden particularly heavy on women, children, and vulnerable groups who bear the brunt of the economic hardships.

It is not just a statistical crisis, it is now human crisis. An epidemic. The global community must therefore - including governments, organizations, and individuals, come together, find sustainable solutions to lift people out of poverty and ensure equitable economic growth.

Our member organizations are already on the mission, from providing food aid to medical outreaches to empowering communities with skills that can drive economic independence. Through various initiatives like education programs, vocational trainings, and financial literacy campaigns, they are working tirelessly to combat the effects of poverty at the grassroots level.

Together, we can work toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for people, planet, and the future.

Let's go. Let's kick out poverty!

𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗦𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗧𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀!

Clean hands save lives - all times. Handwashing with soap remains one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent diseases, reduce infections, and protect communities from health outbreaks. Yet, millions of people around the world still lack access to proper handwashing facilities or the knowledge of its importance. This is why Global Handwashing Day, celebrated every October 15, continues to serve as an important reminder that maintaining good hygiene starts with each of us.

This year’s theme, “Be a Handwashing Hero!”, calls on everyone, from children to adults to take action and make hand hygiene a daily habit.
Being a handwashing hero will mean - recognizing that small actions, like washing hands before eating or after using the toilet, can have a huge impact on community health, good health and well-being.

In reiterating this fact and spreading the global call to action, Casfod Foundation in partnership with the Adamawa WASH Sector and the State Ministry of Water Resources, joined other key stakeholders to bring this year’s theme to life. Together, they championed the message of hygiene promotion and behavior change across communities, empowering individuals to become everyday heroes in their homes, schools, offices, and public spaces.

From interactive demonstrations to community engagement activities, CASFOD’s field teams worked hand in hand with stakeholders to raise awareness on the life-saving power of soap and water. These moments captured the spirit of collective action - where every hand wash counts and every person plays a role in building healthier communities.

Casfod, a member organization of the Network envisions a world where all people even in remote areas of the globe hold the power to create opportunities for themselves and others.
