MY SIBLING BOUGHT A YACHT WORTH ₱8.5M FROM MY PARENTS WHILE I AM ASKING FOR MONEY TO BUY AN OPERATION
While I was sitting in the military clinic and the doctor told me that I might not be able to walk properly anymore, my family opened champagne.
I am asking for ₱280,000 for the operation.
What is my father's answer?
"Sorry, Mara. We're just buying a yacht for Bianca."
And before he called out, I heard my sister laugh.
I am Captain Mara Villanueva, 29 years old, an official of the Philippine Army.
On that day, I was still wearing a camouflage uniform while sitting on the examination table at a military clinic in Quezon City. My right knee was wrapped in a thick brace after a training accident.
The orthopedic surgeon quietly lowered the MRI scan.
"Captain, we can still fix this," he said. "But you need to have surgery before Thursday. If you delay, the injury may become permanent."
I looked at my knee.
“Permanente?”
"There is a possibility that stability will not return completely. You may have problems walking for the rest of your life."
I'm not easily scared.
I'm used to sleeping on the ground, training almost without rest, and continuing even when my whole body aches.
But when I heard the word "forever," that's when I got worried.
There is a waiting list at the military hospital. If I want to be operated on immediately at a private hospital, I need almost ₱280,000.
I have savings, but it's not enough.
That's why I did the thing I've been avoiding for years.
I called my father.
"Dad," I said, "I need surgery. I won't ask if it's not important."
How many seconds did he not answer.
In the background, there is loud music.
There is laughter.
After—
Pop!
The sound of champagne.
I close my eyes.
“Mara,” he sighed, “your timing is so bad.”
“Ano?”
“Nasa Subic kami. Celebration ni Bianca.”
I heard my mother.
"Roberto, tell him not to be too dramatic!"
My hand is shaking from the cellphone.
"Dad, the doctor said I might not be able to walk properly anymore."
"I know, child. But we just paid for your brother's yacht."
My forehead is so wrinkled.
“Yacht?”
"Secondhand," he replied quickly. "Only ₱8.5 million."
I didn't speak right away.
₱8.5 milyon.
While they were thinking whether I was worthy of being lent ₱280,000 to save my knee.
Suddenly, I heard a different voice.
Si Bianca.
“Hello?”
“Bianca…”
"You're so mean, Ate Mara," he said. "It's my birthday celebration today. Do you really need to ruin my mood?"
"I am not—"
"You're a military person, aren't you? You're strong. Take some painkillers first."
Someone laughed behind her.
Then he lowered the call.
I didn't cry.
I was just looking at the white wall of the clinic while my hand, which was holding the phone, gradually went numb.
How many years have I been convinced that I can endure being second.
When Bianca graduated, they bought a new SUV.
During my promotion, I only received text messages.
When he needed a condo in BGC, it was supposedly an "investment".
When I needed help, I was always told:
"You're independent, aren't you?"
That's where I just understood what it means.
They didn't let me be independent.
They used that as an excuse so they wouldn't love me equally.
Two days after that call, someone knocked on my small apartment.
When I opened it, our youngest sibling Nico was there.
He is 25 years old and an apprentice mechanic at a workshop in Pasig.
There is still grease under her nails.
The eyes are red.
“Ate.”
"What are you doing here?"
He handed me a crumpled envelope.
When I opened it, there was money inside.
"₱48,000," he said.
I looked at him.
"Nico, where did this come from?"
He doesn't look at me.
Until I noticed that his favorite old toolbox was missing.
My chest suddenly tightened.
“Nico…”
“Binenta ko.”
“Ano?”
“Yung Snap-on tools ni Lolo.”
I feel like I've been doused with cold water.
That is the most important thing our grandfather left her.
My grandfather was a mechanic before he started the small marine-supply business that my father later expanded.
Nico is still young, and he dreams of setting up his own workshop using those tools.
"Why did you do that?"
He is begging.
"I can buy the tools again, Ate."
“Nico—”
"But I can't afford to buy you a new knee."
That's where I cried.
He hugged me quietly.
Then, shyly, he pulled out a small piece of paper from his pocket.
A lottery ticket.
"I bought it on credit," he said. "I don't know. Maybe the universe owes us something."
I laughed even though I was crying.
“Gago ka talaga.”
“Love you rin, Ate.”
The next day, while Nico was sleeping on my sofa, I remembered the ticket.
I took my cellphone.
I checked the winning numbers.
Una.
Matching.
Second.
Matching.
Third.
I sat down straight.
Until the last number.
All.
Same.
I keep checking.
After that, I checked the jackpot.
₱138,400,000.
I didn't scream.
I didn't wake up Nico.
I didn't call my parents.
I quietly put the lottery ticket inside a plastic envelope.
After my operation, I used crutches and headed straight to a well-known law firm in BGC.
Atty. Rafael de León faced me.
I placed the ticket on his table.
"I want to protect my identity as much as possible," I said.
He is stubborn.
“Anything else?”
I took a deep breath.
“Oo.”
I then placed the old corporate documents that Lolo had hidden in our house back in the front of him.
"I want you to examine all the businesses of my family."
Her eyebrows rose.
"Are you looking for something specific?"
"I don't know."
“Then why investigate?”
I remember the yacht.
The champagne.
Bianca's laughter.
And Nico's hands, which were lost, were given to me just so I could have the chance to walk.
"Because I want to know where their money really comes from."
Three days after that, Atty. Rafael called.
“Mara.”
There's something different about her voice.
"What is that?"
"Forensic accountants have seen it."
I am quiet.
"It's not just about the yacht."
He stopped.
After that, he said the words that completely changed my life.
"Hey... in the papers, it's not your father who owns the largest part of the company."
I tightened my grip on the cellphone.
“If it wasn't for her…”
The lawyer took a deep breath.
“Ikaw.”...... full story in comments👇💎💎
