The original Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2015 American erotic romantic drama directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, with a screenplay by Kelly Marcel. Adapted from E. L. Jamesβ 2011 novel, the film stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, a recent college graduate who finds herself in a complex, intense relationship with the powerful young businessman Christian Grey, portrayed by Jamie Dornan.
Premiering at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival on February 11, 2015, and hitting theaters in IMAX on February 13, the film was distributed by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. While reviews were mixed, Fifty Shades of Grey became an instant commercial success, setting multiple box office records and grossing over $570 million worldwide. Its popular soundtrack album also achieved notable success.
