1976 Ford Gran Torino ‘Starsky & Hutch’ Custom
Television fame transformed an ordinary Ford into one of the most recognizable cars of the 1970s. The 1976 Ford Gran Torino 'Starsky & Hutch' Special Edition featured a distinctive bright red paint scheme with a bold white vector stripe that swept from the rear roofline down the length of both sides. Ford had discontinued Bright Red for 1976, making this color unique to the special edition.
Ford produced approximately 1,000 of these factory replicas in response to public demand generated by the hit ABC television series. The special edition was essentially a paint package that required specific options like the Deluxe Bumper Group and color-keyed mirrors.
Unlike the TV show cars, the factory editions lacked the aftermarket slotted mag wheels and air shocks but retained the signature vector stripe design. Ford painted these cars white at the factory, then masked off the stripe area before applying the red paint.
Engine options included the 351 cubic inch Windsor V8, 400 cubic inch V8, and 460 cubic inch V8, all paired with automatic transmissions. The cars represented the final year for the Gran Torino nameplate, making them particularly significant for collectors today

949 Nash Airflyte
Every 1949 Nash Airflyte came standard with front seats that folded completely flat to create a double-bed-sized sleeping surface (a feature the company branded "Bed-In-A-Car").
Nash dealers sold coordinated bedding kits (mattress pads, sheets, and pillows) as accessories, making the setup as close to a proper bed as anything on four wheels. It was a clever pitch for the postwar road-trip market, when reliable motels were still scarce outside major routes

(more pics below 👇)
Ford's decision to apply woodie styling to a two-door convertible body produced one of the most distinctive American cars of the immediate postwar period.
Henry Ford II commissioned the Sportsman using the company's woodworking expertise from its Iron Mountain factory in Michigan, where craftsmen worked mahogany and ash to construct the body panels. The style was available only on the top-spec Super Deluxe chassis.
Under the hood sat a 239ci OHV V8 producing 100bhp at 3,600rpm through a single Holley carburetor. A 3-speed manual with overdrive and a 2-speed Columbia rear axle gave drivers good flexibility. Four-wheel drum brakes and leaf spring suspension front and rear completed the mechanical package

1963 Studebaker Avanti R2
Studebaker's desperate gamble to save itself produced one of the 1960s' most innovative performance cars, though the Avanti remains curiously underappreciated despite costing more than a Corvette when new.
Company president Sherwood Egbert, recognizing Studebaker's precarious financial position upon his February 1961 arrival, commissioned Raymond Loewy to design a flagship model. Loewy's team retreated to a Palm Springs rental house and completed the design in just 40 days, creating polarizing mid-century modern styling featuring a full fiberglass body.
The optional R2 specification added a Paxton supercharger to the 289 cubic inch V8, producing a factory-rated 290 horsepower and exceeding one horsepower per cubic inch.
Andy Granatelli demonstrated the Avanti’s potential by helping the factory program break 29 speed records at Bonneville, but the headline runs around 170 mph and 200 mph were achieved with more highly tuned R3-powered cars rather than standard R2s.
Front disc brakes appeared as standard equipment, making the Avanti the first American production model to offer them, with conventional drums retained at the rear. Power reached the Twin-Traction limited-slip rear end through either automatic or the rare Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed manual transmission.
Production ended abruptly when Studebaker closed its South Bend factory in late 1963, though some Avantis were completed into 1964 using remaining stock.
Total original Studebaker Avanti production reached just 4,643 examples across both model years, with only 1,883 receiving R2 supercharging and fewer than 500 combining the R2 package with the four-speed manual transmission. See less
