The Andromeda Galaxy is heading toward the Milky Way at about 110 kilometers per second. Right now, the two giant galaxies are separated by roughly 2.5 million light-years, but gravity is slowly pulling them closer together.

In around 4 to 5 billion years, Andromeda and the Milky Way are expected to collide and begin a massive galactic merger.

Despite the scale of the collision, individual stars are unlikely to crash into each other because of the enormous distances between them. Over billions of years, the two galaxies may eventually settle into one enormous galaxy, sometimes nicknamed Milkomeda.
