1338 Kyrgyzstan. A peaceful-looking Mongol-style caravan crosses the endless desert: camels loaded with sacks of silk, spices, and trade goods, riders in felt hats moving steadily westward. Everything looks normal. Everything looks like a normal Silk Road journey.

But that is exactly why it is the best map of the Black Death ever drawn.

The same peaceful camels that once carried silk and porcelain from China to Europe were unknowingly carrying the worst thing the world had ever seen. Rats hiding in the grain sacks. Fleas jumping between the animals and the humans. The bacterium *Yersinia pestis*.

In 1338–1339 near Lake Issyk-Kul, tombstone inscriptions already recorded “pestilence” as the cause of death. By 2022, the *Nature* study led by Philip Slavin and Johannes Krause proved it with ancient DNA — confirming this Central Asian site as the true origin of the Black Death.

The Mongol postal relay network (*yam*) turned a local outbreak into the fastest global transmission system in history. In less than 18 months the plague raced from Issyk-Kul to Crimea, then to Constantinople, and exploded across Europe in 1347.

The stench alone spreads the disease inside Caffa within days.

The desperate survivors aboard Genoese ships flee the port in 1347, carrying the plague with them. In the remote northern port town of Churchill, Manitoba — the so-called “Polar Bear Capital of the World” — a wildlife biologist named Kim Daley faced the same heartbreaking problem that Gary Alt solved in Pennsylvania three decades earlier.

Polar bear mothers give birth to one or two tiny cubs inside maternity dens dug into the Hudson Bay tundra between late November and early January. The blind, hairless newborns weigh barely a pound and depend entirely on their mother’s milk for the next two and a half years. But sometimes the cubs are born too early, or the mother dies, or the family is separated by ice floes or human disturbance. In Churchill, the tiny orphaned cubs often wander into town streets, begging for handouts from tourists, and eventually end up in the local wildlife rescue. Most die within days because they have no mother, no experience hunting seals on the ice, and no way to survive the Arctic winter on their own.

The standard solutions were euthanasia or lifelong captivity. Daley, a field biologist with the Churchill Northern Studies Centre working on a project funded by the British charity Born Free Foundation, wanted a third option: give the orphan to a wild mother who was already raising her own cubs.

The biology said it should not work. Polar bears, like black bears, identify their young by scent. A mother licks her cubs immediately after birth, marking them with her saliva’s chemical signature. If she encounters a cub that does not carry that scent, she treats it as an intruder and may kill it. Outside the den, in the active season on the ice, that rejection is swift and brutal.

But Daley tested the key insight that Gary Alt had discovered inside a winter den: hibernation dramatically lowers aggression and scent discrimination. Polar bear cubs stay with their mothers for two to two and a half years, but the mother’s sense of smell is blunted while she sleeps. So Daley refined the technique further — the same menthol trick Alt had later popularized.

He simply bought dozens of tubes of Vicks VapoRub from the local drugstore (the people of Churchill still laugh when he walks in and loads up on the stuff). He smeared a thick layer of the cold cream over the orphan cub’s head, neck, and back, then left the area before the sedation wore off if he had to hold the mother. The menthol on the cub’s fur masked the foreign scent long enough for the mother to begin treating it as part of the group. She would lick the cub, roll with it, and accept it without ever realizing the smell difference.

One mother that normally had only one or two cubs accepted four or five unrelated orphans. A female polar bear that would normally reject or kill a stranger’s cub now nurses four or five without noticing the scent mismatch. The menthol literally masks the foreign smell for long enough for the cubs to be accepted. The technique has saved dozens of lives across multiple seasons. And Daley still buys a tube every spring from the local drugstore.

The same principle works with the natural den introduction even without the ointment, but the Vicks version is the one that has become the standard conservation tool in Churchill. Every spring, when orphaned cubs appear on the streets or along the shore of Hudson Bay, a biologist loads the “orphan kit” — GPS collars, radio transmitters, cattle-marking crayons for identification, and as many tubes of Vicks as he can carry — and places the tiny cubs beside a sleeping mother.

The mothering instinct is just very strong in most animals. Wildlife biologists who work in Churchill say that a female polar bear that would kill a strange cub on sight in the open will adopt it without question if you place it beside her while she is sleeping or simply smear enough Vicks on the cub to overwhelm her nose for a few hours.

Kim Daley figured that out in the frozen tundra of Manitoba with a sedated mother, a jar of Vicks, and an orphaned cub that had nowhere else to go. The technique he developed has been used in polar bear studies across the Arctic for over twenty years. Every spring, somewhere along the shores of Hudson Bay or the ice floes of the Beaufort Sea, a biologist opens a den or carries a cub to a resting mother and walks away knowing that the mother will wake up in February and count one more mouth to feed without ever questioning where it came from.
