πŸŽ–οΈ Remembering T/Sgt Arthur Beatty, who made the ultimate sacrifice in France on August 22, 1944, at just 23 years old. Born on May 16, 1921, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, he was the second of six siblings. Arthur married Mary Elizabeth Freeman in 1944, and although they had no children, their bond was profound.

Serving in the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, Arthur fought bravely until he was Killed in Action. His final resting place is at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, located at Plot A Row 22 Grave 23.

Mary, his widow, later remarried and passed away at the age of 68 in 1992. Arthur's younger brother, Reece, also served in the Army during World War II and died at 51 in 1973, preserving the family’s legacy of service.

πŸŽ–οΈ Today, we pay homage to 2Lt Dennis Chamberlain, who was killed in action over France on August 3, 1944, at the age of 22.

Dennis Raymond Chamberlain was born on February 22, 1922, in London, England, to Samuel and Alice Chamberlain, growing up as the second of three sons. His father served honorably in the US Navy during both World Wars.

Dennis enlisted in the USAAF and flew Lockheed P-38 Lightnings with the 429th Fighter Squadron of the 474th Fighter Group based at RAF Warmwell. Tragically, he was shot down while attacking ground targets near Gennes-sur-Glaize in France.

He is now laid to rest at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France, Plot O Row 5 Grave 3.

Both of his brothers, Robert and Donald, also served as pilots in the Navy during WW2, passing away in 2013 and 2009, respectively.

Born on February 25, 1919, in Massachusetts to Italian immigrants Frank and Ida Emilio, Orazio was the fourth of seven siblings.

Drafted in 1942, he served with G Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, fighting valiantly across North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and Southern France, where he was killed during intense house-to-house combat.

PVT Emilio is interred at the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial in France, Plot C Row 10 Grave 4.

Three of his brothers also served in WW2, Benjamin β€œBennie,” Romeo, and Alfred β€œFred,” all of whom returned home safely. In tribute to their service, a highway section has been named the β€œEmilio Brothers Memorial Highway.”

Ernest Reitnauer Bittenbender was born on February 26, 1922, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Lottie Bittenbender, being the second of four siblings.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps and fought bravely with Company B, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, of the 2nd Marine Division. Tragically, he lost his life near Masalog Point on Tinian.

CPL Bittenbender is honored at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii, Plot F 768.

His younger brother, Melvin Bittenbender, also served in the USAAF during WW2 and passed away in 2019 at the age of 95.

πŸŽ–οΈ Today marks 83 years since the loss of USMC PFC Emory Martin, who was killed in action on Gavutu Island on August 7, 1942, at the age of 22.

PFC Emory Domingos Martin entered this world on July 12, 1920, in Georgia, to Domingos and Emma Martin, where he shared his childhood with one brother and five sisters. His father, Domingos, was a proud Portuguese immigrant from the Azores.

At 18, Emory enlisted in the Marine Corps and bravely served with the 1st Parachute Battalion of the 1st Marine Division. He fought valiantly during the landings on Gavutu in the Solomon Islands, facing fierce opposition from Japanese Navy soldiers.

He now rests at Andersonville National Cemetery in Georgia, in Section A, Row 13 822.

πŸŽ–οΈ On this day, we commemorate the sacrifice of PVT Sidney Blankenship, who was killed in action during the fierce battles in Normandy on July 17, 1944, at just 28 years old.

Born on August 10, 1915, in West Hamlin, West Virginia, Sidney was the cherished son of Eli Preston and Sena Clementine Blankenship, growing up alongside three sisters and three brothers.

He married Rosa Whitt, and together they welcomed their son, Gary Roger Blankenship, on December 18, 1939.

While serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division, Sidney made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom. He is laid to rest at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France, in Plot B Row 21 Grave 30.

Rosa, his devoted widow, never remarried and lived until the age of 89, passing away on October 21, 2004. Tragically, their son Gary succumbed to leukemia at the young age of 18 on September 5, 1958.

Let us remember Sidney Blankenship and his bravery, as well as the legacy he left behind with his family.

πŸŽ–οΈ On this day, we reflect on the life of S/Sgt Clare Hultengren, who was Killed in Action in a tragic crash near Herefordshire, England, on August 12, 1944, at just 22 years old. Born on June 6, 1922, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Edmund and Eunice Hultengren, Clare came from a family with a proud military tradition, with his father having served in WW1.

After enlisting in the USAAF, Clare completed gunnery school and was assigned to the 577th Bomb Squadron, 392nd Bomb Group, operating from RAF Wendling. On that fateful day, he was a gunner aboard B-24H Liberator 42-95023, which tragically crashed shortly after takeoff due to poor weather conditions, claiming the lives of all crew members.

It is said that the pilot, 2Lt John D. Ellis, heroically maneuvered the aircraft to avoid crashing into the town of Cheshunt, saving countless lives. A plaque in the Cheshunt library honors these brave airmen, stating: "To these gallant American airmen who on August 12, 1944, sacrificed their lives to prevent their aircraft from crashing on our homes."

S/Sgt Clare Hultengren is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota - Section C-25 Site 14268, where his legacy continues to be remembered with honor.

πŸŽ–οΈ Today, we honor PVT Filimon Castillo, who tragically passed away as a prisoner of war in the Philippines on August 30, 1942, at the age of 22. Born on October 15, 1919, in Lemitar, New Mexico, to Silvestre and Manuelita Castillo, Filimon was one of two brothers who served during World War II.

After enlisting in the Army on March 28, 1941, Filimon was assigned to the 200th Coast Artillery Corps in the Philippines. As the situation worsened following the Japanese attack, he and his fellow soldiers were forced to become infantry troops after their artillery was destroyed. Following the surrender of US Forces in Bataan, Filimon was captured and endured the harrowing Bataan Death March. He ultimately died at Cabanatuan POW Camp on August 30, 1942.

His remains were recovered after the war, and he is interred at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial - Plot L Row 9, Grave 80, with a memorial marker also located at Santa Fe National Cemetery in New Mexico. His older brother, Ignacio, also served in the Philippines and faced dire conditions as a POW, ultimately going missing when the Arisan Maru was sunk on October 24, 1944.

πŸŽ–οΈ On this day, we remember Sgt John Hodges Jr, who lost his life in a tragic crash 80 years ago. At just 20 years old, he was serving in Japan on August 30, 1945, when his B-29, 44-61554, was on a mission to deliver vital supplies to POWs in Fukuoka Prefecture. Unfortunately, thick fog and rain caused the aircraft to collide with a mountain near Mount Oyaji, resulting in the loss of all 12 crew members.

Born on November 22, 1924, in Norfolk, Virginia, to John and Daphne Hodges, John grew up with at least one sister. He attended Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania before enlisting in the USAAF, where he became a B-29 radar operator with the 20th Air Force, 58th Bombardment Wing, and 40th Bombardment Group, 45th Bombardment Squadron.

In recognition of his bravery, Hodges was posthumously awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart. He rests at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii, Section M Site 1207. A stone monument stands in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, honoring his and his comrades' sacrifice.

Born on November 5, 1923, in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, he was part of a loving family with at least one brother and a sister.

Enlisting in the Army, Donald served in the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, during intense combat to capture the heavily fortified German-occupied port city of Brest.

PVT Donald Monti is honored at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France, Plot G Row 4 Grave 15, a testament to his bravery and sacrifice.
