A NOTE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING.
A crumpled message passed beneath my plate.
My daughter's hand shook as she pushed it to me.
All around us—laughter, clinking silverware, but her eyes never left the kitchen door.
I glanced at my husband, oblivious.
Why was she so afraid?
I stood up, pressing my hand to my forehead.
"I'm sorry, I think a migraine is coming on," I choked out, voice thin.
We stepped into the cold, the silence between us sharp as glass.
The car door slammed—safety, for a moment.
I searched her face for answers.
She stared back at the glowing house, lips trembling.
My heart pounded as I followed her gaze—to the window.
My husband's silhouette framed by the light.
But then—
A shadow passed behind him.
It moved wrong.
Something inhuman.
I turned to her, my voice barely a whisper:
"What did you see in there—"
