DOUGLAS COUNTY, GEORGIA
Operation Christmas is now accepting applications.
The event, which was started by former Douglas County Superior Court Judge William H. "Beau" McClain, will be in its 11th year of helping families put Christmas gifts under their trees.
The opportunity is only available to children receiving WIC, free or reduced meals and other services from the health department or educational system because of financial hardship.
Last year, Operation Christmas served 10,761 children. Also included in that number were inner-city families from Atlanta; 300 children received new winter coats and 15 received Nintendo Switches.
According to its page, over the past 10 years, the program has served more than 90,000 children.
With McClain retiring last year, Operation Christmas also appeared to be headed for retirement.
However, the charity will run for an 11th year.
Several area churches will hand out gifts. In addition, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Douglasville Police Department will also be at pick-up.
