The popular sitcom Friends is a staple of pop culture history, but it almost looked—and sounded—very different. Before the show became a global phenomenon, creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman cycled through several working titles during development. When the pilot was first pitched to NBC in the early 1990s, the series was originally titled Insomnia Cafe. This initial concept focused heavily on the group of friends hanging out at a local coffee house, sharing their anxieties and life updates.As the project moved further into production and the characters started to evolve, the title changed to Friends Like Us. NBC executives later wanted to differentiate it from other shows, prompting a brief shift to Across the Hall. By the time the pilot episode was filmed, the creators settled on Six of One. However, just before the show officially premiered in September 1994, the network decided to simplify it down to the iconic title we know today: Friends. Changing the name proved to be the right move, allowing the series to build a timeless identity around the central bond of the main cast.
