When Andrea Virgin lost her husband TJ in a plane crash, she was 31. Their daughter was 4 months old.

She had already made a major career pivot from professional ballerina to civil engineer, and then she had to face a whole new set of obstacles.

After everything she’s been through, her message is simple, and cuts to the core of the stories we tell at She Pivots:

It’s never just about moving on. It’s about moving forward.

This conversation was so moving, and I know you’ll be moved by Andrea’s story too.

Somewhere between kindergarten and your first “real” job, most of us get told to put the crayons away and be practical. Andrea Virgin never bought that.

She was a professional ballerina who pivoted into engineering when the 2008 recession hit the arts world hard.

Then, four months after her daughter was born, her husband TJ died in a plane crash.
Andrea was 31.

What she did next, she did on purpose. She’ll tell you the dancer is the reason the engineer was ever any good, and that same creative streak is what let her rebuild her life, by choice, not by accident.

Today she’s Chair & CEO of The Center in Boca Raton, taking on what she calls a creativity crisis: we start out wildly creative as kids, and most of us have it schooled right out of us by adulthood.

Her answer is a home for creativity built for every age: because even though everyone says creativity is important, but we aren’t doing enough to support it.

51 days after 17 year old Chelsie Hill left the hospital, still healing from the car accident that left her legs paralyzed, she rolled out in front of her whole school, with her entire dance team beside her. Every one of them was in a wheelchair.

She said the thing that gives her chills was the feeling of being seen as herself. And knowing that people were looking at her not because she was different, but because she was part of a team again.

That was the spark for everything she has built since: a wheelchair dance team, a community of disabled women and girls, and programming that merges the two through The Rollettes Experience.

Dance is dance, whether you’re walking or rolling.

The first question a 17 year old Chelsie Hill asked her doctor after the car accident that paralyzed her wasn’t about walking.

It was about if she could still dance.

She’d been dancing since she was three, competed nationally, and dreamed of going pro. A drunk driver changed what that dream would look like. But not whether or not she’d chase it.

She wanted to be seen. Being on a team, and part of a community, was something she craved.

She realized she wanted to connect with other girls in chairs. She wanted friends who were like her.

And she wanted to dance.

Those desires turned into Rollettes™ | Wheelchair Dance Team, now one of the largest networks for women and girls with disabilities in the world.

This month is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, and Chelsie is on the pod to talk about the accident, the pivot, motherhood, and what it takes to build a space that’s not just accessible to women in wheelchairs like her, but designed for them in the first place.

Mandana Dayani and her family fled Iran as religious refugees when she was 5 years old.

Suddenly she was in an unfamiliar place and had to had to learn a whole new culture and language while her family figured out how to make ends meet.

Years later, she’s working in fashion and realizes oh. I don’t know that color.

“I just didn’t know how much I didn’t know until I was in those situations”

Now she can laugh about the Devil Wears Prada Cerulean Monologue not hitting the same, but she knows it’s because of the way that she grew up that there is nothing she can’t figure out.

In this week’s episode, she gets into the many other ways being an immigrant influenced her career path, and how she became the multi-hyphenate media powerhouse she is today.

Honored to be one of 100 women in Argent’s 10-year campaign. And truly, what a group to be a part of.

What the extraordinary Sali Christeson has accomplished over the last 10 years is worth a celebration. If you know me at all, you know I believe in the power of a good suit, and in the power of women-centered, women-led brands. Argent has accomplished both and then some.

Happy birthday, Argent 💜

New year, new chapter. And nobody does new chapters like MANDANA DAYANI.

Mandana Dayani’s résumé reads like it’s actually for a team’s worth of people: corporate lawyer → talent agent → the force behind the Rachel Zoe brand → tech exec → co-founder of I Am a Voter → President of Prince Harry & Meghan’s Archewell → presidential appointee → investor, and beyond.

Every part of it traces back to a little girl from a Jewish family who fled Iran with nothing and built a whole new life from scratch. (Including, at one point, sitting in a fashion meeting, hearing someone say ”chartreuse,” and thinking: “that was NOT in my box of eight crayons.”)

Happy New York Fashion Week. Because if anyone knows reinvention never goes out of style, it’s Mandana.

Shana Tova to everyone celebrating. We love a fresh start around here.
