BEFORE MY HUSBAND DIED, HE ASKED ME TO DELIVER A SEALED LETTER TO A WOMAN I’D NEVER MET—HER FIRST QUESTION MADE MY BLOOD RUN COLD
Zane and I were married for 34 years. He wasn’t just my husband; he was the person I trusted more than anyone in the world.
After three decades together, I truly believed there were no secrets left between us.
Then Zane was diagnosed with aggressive cancer.
During his final months, I barely left his side. Two days before he died, while we were alone in his hospital room, he reached into the bedside drawer and handed me a sealed envelope.
A woman’s name was written across the front.
I had never heard it before.
“If something happens to me, promise you’ll deliver this to her yourself,” Zane said. “And whatever you do, don’t open it.”
I wanted to ask who she was and why my dying husband was secretly writing to another woman. But looking at him in that hospital bed, I couldn’t bring myself to argue with what might be one of his final requests.
So I promised.
After Zane died, the funeral and endless condolences consumed me. For a while, I nearly forgot about the envelope.
Then, two days after we buried him, I found it in my bedside drawer.
The next morning, I drove almost three hours to the address written on the back.
A woman answered the door.
The moment I mentioned Zane’s name, all the color disappeared from her face.
She took the envelope with trembling hands and opened it immediately. Her eyes moved across the first line, and suddenly she looked terrified.
Then she stared directly at me.
“Did Zane tell you everything?”
My stomach dropped.
“No,” I whispered. “He didn’t tell me anything. Who are you?”
The woman didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked back down at the letter, read another few lines, and covered her mouth with one hand.
That was when I realized this wasn’t simply a goodbye letter.
My husband had sent me three hours away to discover something he had kept hidden during our 34-year marriage—and whatever was written on that page had left this stranger afraid to be the one who told me.
👍 Like if you believe a spouse deserves the truth, even when it’s painful.
💬 What do you think Zane had been hiding from his wife for all those years?
