he used to joke that i was his “number one co-driver.” same truck. same overnight runs. arguing about which playlist survives the night shift. splitting gas station snacks like it was some weird little routine. half the yard already assumed we were dating. and honestly… part of me thought maybe they were right. he’d always leave me the last coffee in the thermos. i’d take the wheel when he started getting quiet and tired. we moved like a system that just worked. so when he suggested grabbing dinner on our reset, i didn’t think twice. it felt simple. comfortable. like maybe something was finally happening. he always said he liked that i’m “different from most girls.” that i work harder than half the guys out here. that i’m “easy to be around.” then he asked what i do when i’m not on the road. i could’ve dodged it. could’ve kept it surface level. but i didn’t. i just told him the truth. the air changed instantly. no yelling. no insults. just… distance. next shift? silence in the cab. no music fights. no stupid jokes. he barely even looked my way. like one honest answer turned me from his favorite co-driver into someone he didn’t even know anymore. 💔

I spend long days behind the wheel and most nights I still fall asleep alone… all because of the job I chose. a lot of men say they admire independent women. until they realize what this life on the road actually looks like. endless miles. late nights at truck stops. coming home drained, clothes smelling like diesel and highway dust. my ex used to tease me that I wasn’t “soft” anymore. one night after a long haul I walked through the door and he wrinkled his nose and said I smelled like the truck. he grabbed a pillow and went to sleep on the couch. not long after that, we broke up. since then, dating has been complicated. some guys say the schedule is too much. others hate that I’m gone half the week. and a few have flat out told me it’s not feminine. so these days it’s mostly just me. long highways. an empty passenger seat. quiet nights at the end of a shift. and a life I’m proud to live… even if it seems to scare most men away. 🚚

yeah… the woman standing there with those laser eyes is my mom. and yes… it was just as embarrassing as it looks. i’m 21 and one of the youngest truckers in our yard. most days the guys treat me completely normal. we run loads, check trailers, deal with breakdowns… same job as everyone else. but apparently some people in the yard have been talking. little comments. little jokes. stuff about how i’m “always hanging around certain trucks after shift.” how i “spend a lot of time talking with the older drivers.” how they’ve seen me “laughing a little too hard” in the parking lot after long runs. i didn’t even know any of this was being said until my mom called me. except she didn’t just call. the next morning she literally showed up at the yard to “check on me.” and then spent half the day standing around watching our whole crew work. just standing there with those laser eyes scanning everything. the guys were whispering. a few of them laughing. my dispatcher kept asking if everything was okay. meanwhile my mom kept pulling me aside like: “who was that driver you were talking to?” “why are people saying these things about you?” “why do they think you’re always around the trucks after shift?” i kept telling her nothing weird is going on. but once rumors start in a place like this… suddenly everyone thinks they know exactly what you’re doing all day. 🚛

You could have told me earlier

Let me know

and a few nights ago i went on a date with a 39-year-old guy. i thought maybe older meant more mature. guess not. everything was fine until he asked what i do for work. i told him i drive a semi. he literally laughed. then started saying stuff like “that’s not very feminine” “men don’t want a girl living at truck stops” and “you’re too young to be doing a man’s job” crazy how a man almost twice my age was this bothered by a 21-year-old paying her own bills. he acted interested all week… then the second he found out i work harder than most men, suddenly i was “too much.” some of them say they want a strong woman but what they really want is one they can look down on 🚚

i probably should’ve hidden better, the second he opened it, he started acting like he had just uncovered some insane crime scene. he kept asking me what i even do off duty, why i need all that stuff, and saying it was “inappropriate” to keep in a work truck. then he said he was going to report me to our boss because “this is a professional environment.” and the dumbest part? he actually did. but my boss barely even cared. he basically said as long as i show up, do my job right, and keep making deliveries, what i do after work is my business. the only weird part is… after that, he started asking a lot more questions than he needed to. like way too many. suddenly he wanted to know exactly what all the stuff was for, what i’ve made recently, what’s new in the box… at first i thought he was just being nosy. now he asks me almost every day if I have already new stuff. so now the co-driver who wanted to “report” me is acting self-righteous, and the boss who said he didn’t care somehow wants regular updates. crazy how fast men go from judging you… to getting way too interested in the details.

people love acting like being a lady trucker is “unfeminine” until they realize what this job actually does to you. there are things i do now that would’ve grossed me out before… but out here, they’re just normal. 1. i’ll eat with diesel on my hands and not even think twice. when you’ve been driving for hours, you stop caring about looking cute. 2. i treat a semi-clean truck stop bathroom like it’s a luxury spa. that’s how low the standards get when you live on the road. 3. i’ll rewear the same hoodie, same shorts, same bra way longer than most girls would admit. because when you’re exhausted, dirty, and hauling loads all day… survival wins over dignity. people swear they want a “hardworking woman” but the second they see what that actually looks like, they get judgmental real fast.

It hurts

first day they paired me with him everybody warned me but nobody explained why they just said he “wasn’t over losing his old partner” i thought they meant the guy retired no they meant obsession the second i got in the truck he grabbed this framed photo off the dash and looked at me like i already disappointed him all shift he kept staring at it crying whispering saying his old partner would’ve been a better driver and “wouldn’t be doing the lizard off duty” then at every gas station he showed strangers the photo and told them i could never compare cashiers mechanics random people pumping gas then he started calling me by his old partner’s name and getting mad at me for answering last night he cried so hard i had to pull onto the shoulder hugging the frame saying trucking died when his partner left then he looked at me and said people would understand why he can’t even look at me if they knew what i do off duty bro i’m 21 you’re 59 and i still have 3 more shifts with him
