Last Thursday afternoon I noticed Reggie squinting, and I immediately knew something wasn’t right. With him, anything involving his eyes always makes me nervous.

We took him to an urgent care and they diagnosed a corneal ulcer and told us to recheck in 3–5 days and we’re confident it would heal. We scheduled the recheck with his ophthalmologist The Animal Medical Center NYC hoping we’d get the good kind of news today — that he’d be healing well and maybe even ready to come out of the cone and finally be done with this.

Instead, we learned it still wasn’t healing the way it should be. He was diagnosed with an indolent corneal ulcer, which is basically a surface ulcer on the eye where the top layer of the cornea doesn’t properly “stick” back down to heal. Even more frustrating is that these don’t always come from a clear injury — he may not have even scratched his eye at all. In older dogs, like Reggie at 8.5, it can just happen because that layer of the cornea becomes a little weaker and doesn’t adhere the way it should, even from something as simple as normal blinking or minor irritation you’d never even notice.

They did a diamond burr procedure, which is basically using a tiny specialized dremel (🤮) to gently polish the surface of his eye and remove the non-healing layer so fresh, healthy cells finally have a chance to attach properly and heal the way they’re supposed to.

We go back in 3 weeks for a recheck, and I’m really hoping this is the turning point for him. He’s being closely monitored and is comfortable, but I won’t lie — anything with his eyes always has me a little on edge.

If anyone has gone through an indolent corneal ulcer before, I’d really appreciate hearing your experience.
