There are stories we tell. And then there are stories that tell us.

For writer, director, actor, and artist Anne-Marie Agbodji, Anne-Marie Agbodji storytelling is a way of making sense of the things we carry, especially the stories that live quietly beneath the surface.

Her latest short film, Breaking UP, began with something deeply personal and grew into a story about choice, bodily autonomy, expectation, and what it means to choose a life of your own.

We talked about finding the gold in the quiet stories, the women whose strength often goes unseen, and why sometimes the most personal stories become the most universal.

Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen is at Poster House until Sept 6… which is tomorrow. So make haste!

I love this museum for their dedication the graphic arts and proving the importance of posters in information distribution in history. Their exhibits are always well curated and thought provoking. I knew this one would be no different. So much was lost during this time period of filmmaking, yet ephemera still tells us so much if we know how to look closely enough.

Also, anything that starts with an illustration of Josephine Baker on the window pretty much has my name all over it so, of COURSE I loved this. 🥰

From their website: The posters in this exhibition allow viewers to consider how Black storytelling was transferred and transformed during its transition from stage to screen. They also document aspects of the historic innovations of playwrights, composers, directors, and producers for Black actors as they sought to represent life and experiences for Black audiences through their own creative perspectives.
