Having survived kidnapping and enslavement by ISIS, Mediha and her younger brothers search for their missing family eight years after the Yazidi genocide. Filmed over three years across Iraq, Turkey, and Syria, Mediha follows her journey to confront her trauma and seek justice. (Documentary, 90 min, Dir. Hasan Oswald, Executive Producer. A home away from home for Kurdish cinema and storytelling.

Founded in 2017, the New York Kurdish Film Festival (NYKFF) celebrates the richness of Kurdish cinema and storytelling while creating a platform for voices that explore resilience, identity, memory, and cultural survival. 
This showcase explores the power of film to tell stories of genocide with care, preserve cultural memory, document survival and resilience, and give voice to experiences shaped by political oppression. Through our studio show conversation with festival director Xeyal Qertel, filmmakers Halime Akturk and Azad Azizyan, and Yazidi activist and survivor Mediha Alhamad, we discover how NYKFF has become a home away from home for Kurdish filmmakers, film lovers, and Kurds around the world, a space where stories, culture, and community come together

After the studio show, stay tuned for a special selection of powerful and visually striking documentaries and narrative films from NYKFF. Featured films include Ezda, The Address, Women’s Village (JinWar), Against Forgetting, The Hole in the Wall (Biraxane), and Mediha.
