At least 1,500 missing after deadly Nepal-Tibet flood.
By Fatima Al-Kassab, Diaa Hadid | NPR
More than 1,500 people have now been confirmed missing after deadly flash floods hit the Nepal-Tibet border early Wednesday, sweeping away roads, bridges and entire villages. At least 270 people have died in Nepal. In China, authorities say two people have been rescued and the death toll stands at three.
The U.S. Geological Survey says a glacial collapse triggered the floods, after initially reporting the event as a 4.4 magnitude earthquake.
Chinese surveillance footage from the Tibetan side of the border shows a huge wall of mud and debris crashing over buildings and engulfing roads as people desperately try to flee the torrent.
Residents have described their terror as great waves of water barreled down valleys, burying people and homes under the mud. Santa Tamang, a 25-year-old university student who lives in one river valley, spoke to NPR by phone.
Tamang said her family was able to rush to higher ground, carrying her elderly grandmother with them, but their home was washed away. "Everything is gone. My childhood, my family, my community," Tamang said.
Nepal is a popular tourist destination, and many of those missing are foreign nationals. According to the latest figures from the Nepal Tourism Board, 644 overseas nationals have not yet been located. They include 65 U.S. citizens, 178 people from India, 33 from the United Kingdom, 35 from Australia and 25 from Canada.
Chinese officials say 558 people are missing on the Tibet side of the border, including 260 foreign nationals.
Many of the missing are Hindu pilgrims, who were journeying to Kailash Mansarovar, a high-altitude site in Tibet revered by Hindus and Buddhists.
Rescue efforts, still in their first stages, have been hampered by the fact that the floodwaters have washed away entire roads. Riaz Lodhi, country director for the World Food Programme in Nepal, said rescue workers are trying to dig people out of the mud and that the Nepalese government is deploying helicopters to help.
"It's all happening in the mountainous region where road access is always challenging, but under these circumstances, as far as we know at the moment, it is impossible," Lodhi told NPR.
Dhruba Gurmachhan from the aid group World Vision says they expect more than 30,000 households to be impacted by the disaster.
Aid workers say Nepalese authorities are well-practiced in disaster response, having learned from Nepal's devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed more than 1,000 people. But Gurmachhan says these floods are unlike anything anyone has seen before.
"We are very much worried about children, women and people with a disability. They are in the open sky. They don't have anything to eat, they don't have sanitation," Gurmachhan told NPR.

Jill Biden Reveals What Joe Told Her After Leaving the 2024 Race
Former first lady Jill Biden has offered a deeply personal account of the night Joe Biden decided to end his 2024 reelection campaign, saying the former president told her he felt he had “no choice.”
In a new interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Jill said Biden was facing intense pressure as Democratic support for his campaign weakened following his June 2024 debate performance. She recalled asking him how he was doing after he made the decision to step aside. According to Jill, he took her hand and said, “Jilly, I had no choice.”
Jill also pushed back against claims that she was responsible for Biden remaining in the race or ultimately leaving it. She said she deliberately refused to tell him what decision to make, telling him that he had to make the choice himself and live with it for the rest of his life.
Biden announced on July 21, 2024, that he would end his reelection bid and endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Jill described his decision as “heroic,” saying he gave up a position he had spent decades working toward.
Her comments offer a more emotional look at one of the most dramatic moments of the 2024 presidential campaign—and reopen questions about the pressure that ultimately pushed Biden to leave the race.

In the spring of 1966, a Nashville record executive explicitly warned a young Dolly Parton that getting married would end her career before it even started.
She ignored the ultimatum. Instead of staying single to appease the industry, she and Carl Thomas Dean quietly drove across the state line to Ringgold, Georgia, on Memorial Day. They chose the small town specifically to avoid the local press and the Nashville business machine.
There was no red carpet or industry celebration. The guest list consisted only of the officiant, his wife, and Parton’s mother, Avie Lee. The twenty-year-old bride did not wear an expensive designer gown. She stood in the small church in a short white dress that her mother had sewn by hand.
During the 1960s, executives genuinely believed a female country singer was committing career su***de if she was no longer single. Parton risked her first major recording opportunities to protect the man she trusted. The handmade dress and the empty church laid the foundation for a bond built far away from the spotlight she was about to step into.
The quiet Georgia ceremony anchored a marriage that has now lasted for over half a century. The exact conversations that took place when she returned to her management as a married woman reveal a much sharper look at her early business instincts.

Trump has formally sent a landmark 30-year civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia to Congress for review. The deal could open the door to major U.S. nuclear-energy projects in Saudi Arabia while deepening Washington-Riyadh ties.
The agreement is also tied to broader Middle East diplomacy, including Saudi Arabia’s potential normalization of relations with Israel. Critics warn that nuclear cooperation could raise proliferation concerns in a region already strained by tensions with Iran

Trump Turns Up the Heat on Canada With Explosive Trade Accusations
President Donald Trump has launched another sharp attack on Canada, accusing Ottawa of “ripping off” the United States and unfairly hurting American farmers and businesses.
In a series of Truth Social posts on August 25, Trump claimed Canada has imposed tariffs of as much as 400% on U.S. farm products and said those policies have pushed American companies out of business. He also revived a dispute over Gulfstream aircraft, alleging Canada delayed certification of the U.S.-made jets for roughly 10 years while favoring a Canadian competitor.
Trump described Canada as the “most difficult and unreasonable” country he has dealt with, adding that he believes Ottawa has taken advantage of the United States for decades.
The comments come as the two longtime trading partners face a major escalation in their tariff dispute. The Trump administration has imposed additional duties on several categories of Canadian goods, while Canada has prepared retaliatory measures.
Trump’s latest remarks signal that the trade fight is far from settled—and could put even more pressure on already strained U.S.-Canada relations.
