Erykah Badu Posing for her High School Senior Picture in 1989.The Photo at the very bottom was also Taken in 1989.Erica Abi Wright (born February 26, 1971), known professionally as Erykah Badu, is an American singer and songwriter. Influenced by R&B, soul, and hip hop, Badu rose to prominence in the late 1990s when her debut album Baduizm (1997), placed her at the forefront of the neo soul movement, earning her the nickname "Queen of Neo Soul" by music critics.Erykah Badu was born in Dallas, Texas. Badu had her first taste of show business at the age of four, singing and dancing at the Dallas Theater Center and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) under the guidance of her godmother, Gwen Hargrove, and uncle TBAAL founder Curtis King. By the age of 14, Badu was freestyling for a local radio station alongside such talent as Roy Hargrove. In her youth, she had decided to change the spelling of her first name from Erica to Erykah, as she believed her original name was a "slave name". The term "kah" signifies the inner self. She adopted the surname "Badu" because it is her favorite jazz s**t sound; also, among the Akan people in Ghana, it is the term for the 10th-born child. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Badu went on to study theater at Grambling State University, a historically black university. She left the university in 1993 before graduating, to focus more fully on music. During this time, Badu took several minimum-wage jobs to support herself. She taught drama and dance to children at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Working and touring with her cousin, Robert "Free" Bradford, she recorded a 19-song demo, Country Cousins, which attracted the attention of Kedar Massenburg. He set Badu up to record a duet with D''''Angelo, "Your Precious Love", and eventually signed her to a record deal with Universal Records.
Badu''''s career began after she opened a show for D''''Angelo in 1994 in Fort Worth, leading to record label executive Kedar Massenburg signing her to Kedar Entertainment. Her first album, Baduizm, was released in February 1997. It spawned four singles: "On & On", "Appletree", "Next Lifetime" and "Otherside of the Game". The album was certified triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Her first live album, Live, was released in November 1997 and was certified double Platinum by the RIAA.
Her second studio album, Mama''''s Gun, was released in 2000. It spawned three singles: "Bag Lady", which became her first top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at #6, "Didn''''t Cha Know?" and "Cleva". The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Badu''''s third album, Worldwide Underground, was released in 2003. It generated three singles: "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)", "Danger" and "Back in the Day (Puff)" with ''''Love'''' becoming her second song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #9. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA. Badu''''s fourth album, New Amerykah Part One, was released in 2008. It spawned two singles: "Honey" and "Soldier". New Amerykah Part Two was released in 2010 and fared well both critically and commercially. It contained the album''''s lead single "Window Seat", which led to controversy.
Badu''''s voice has been compared to jazz singer Billie Holiday. Early in her career, Badu was recognizable for her eccentric style, which often included wearing very large and colorful headwraps. She was a core member of the Soulquarians.
As an actress, she has played a number of supporting roles in movies including Blues Brothers 2000, The Cider House Rules and House of D. She also has appeared in the documentaries Before the Music Dies and The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975.
AWARDS & NOMINATIONS
In 1997, Badu received twenty nominations and won three, Favorite Female Solo Single for "On & On", Favorite Female Solo Album for Baduizm and Best R&B/Soul or Rap Song of the Year for "On & On" at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
In 1998, Badu received fourteen nominations and won eight, including Favorite R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist at the American Music Awards; Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "On & On" and Best R&B Album for Baduizm at the Grammy Awards; Outstanding New Artist and Outstanding Female Artist at the NAACP Image Awards; Favorite Female Soul/R&B Single for "On & On", Favorite Female Soul/R&B Album for Baduizm and Favorite New R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist for "On & On" at the Soul Train Music Awards.

He was well known for his role as Tonto, the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger in the American Western television series The Lone Ranger.
Jay Silverheels was born on Canada's Six Nation's Reserve and was one of 10 children. He was a star lacrosse player and a boxer before he entered films as a stuntman in 1938. He worked in a number of films through the 1940s before gaining notice as the Osceola brother in a Humphrey Bogart film Key Largo (1948). Most of Silverheels' roles consisted of bit parts as an Indian character. In 1949, he worked in the movie The Cowboy and the Indians (1949) with another "B movie" actor Clayton Moore. Later that year, Silverheels was hired to play the faithful Indian companion, Tonto, in the TV series The Lone Ranger (1949) series, which brought him the fame that his motion picture career never did.
Silverheels recreated the role of Tonto in two big-screen color movies with Moore,The Lone Ranger (1956) and The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold (1958). After the TV series ended in 1957, Silverheels could not escape the typecasting of Tonto. He would continue to appear in an occasional film and television show but became a spokesperson to improve the portrayal of Indians in the media.
Familiar Canadian Indian actor who shot to fame as Tonto, the faithful Indian companion of the masked man on the US television series The Lone Ranger (1949). A member of the Mohawk tribe of Canada's Six Nations Reserve, Silverheels excelled at wrestling, horse racing, football, boxing, and hockey, and became a renowned lacrosse player.
With the help of actor Joe E. Brown,Silverheels obtained work as a stuntman and extra in Hollywood films. Following military service in World War II, Silverheels returned to film and landed small, often stereotypical roles as Indian warriors in Westerns. John Huston cast him as one of the fugitive Osceola brothers in Key Largo (1948), and Silverheels followed with the two roles that would define his career, Tonto and the Apache leader Geronimo, whom he would play several times beginning with the Western classic Broken Arrow (1950). Silverheels' enormous fame as Tonto overshadowed everything else, although it did not prevent him from playing other prominent roles. Even after completing The Lone Ranger (1949)series, Silverheels continued to reprise Tonto for commercials, comic guest spots, and spoofs.
Silverheels became an outspoken activist for Indian rights and a respected teacher within the Indian acting community. He appeared on talk and variety shows performing his own poetry. In later years, he began a second career as a harness racer. His health failed in the 1970s, and he died of a stroke in 1980, a beloved figure to the Baby Boom generation America. His son, Jay Silverheels Jr. has acted in television as well.

Who civilized who? The dominant narrative tells us that the Spanish brought culture, progress and civilization to America. However, it takes a closer look to understand that indigenous civilizations were not only advanced, but surpassed Europeans in many respects.
What the indigenous people already mastered:
Hygiene: The Aztecs bathed twice a day when in Europe the standard was once a week. Who needed cleaning lessons?.
Medicine: Aztec herbalist was the most advanced in the world. They had specialized medical schools, with disciplines such as surgery, hematology and internal medicine. They used suppositories, ointments and suction cups, while Europe still resorted to practices like sangria.
Architecture and engineering: From Teotihuacan to Tenochtitlรกn, their structures not only withstand the test of time, but are wonders of urban planning and design. Chinampas, a system of cultivation on artificial islands, continue to be a unique example of agricultural sustainability.
Astronomy and math: The Mayans calculated the number "zero" and created a calendar more accurate than the European. His astronomical knowledge was not only ahead of time, but it was fundamental to his daily life.
Art and literature: They created codes on paper elaborated with tree bark long before Europeans brought print. His works in feathers, metals, ceramics and wood amazed the conquerors.
Music and Poetry: Indigenous people celebrated nature, love, and friendship through songs and poems, demonstrating a deep connection to their environment.
Economy and trade: The Aztecs and Incas developed extensive trading systems, reaching as far as Nicaragua, while Europe lacked basic drainage.
Reflection:
The true story reveals that America was not a wild or uncivilized territory. It was a continent full of knowledge, creativity, and unique breakthroughs that Europe still did not know. The conquest destroyed much, but it cannot erase the footprints of greatness indigenous cultures left behind.

10/11/2025

Loco (1823โ€“February 2, 1905) was a notable chief of the Copper Mines Mimbreรฑo Apache who gained recognition for his unwavering commitment to peace with the U.S. Army, even when his fellow Apaches, like Victorio and Geronimo, chose resistance. Despite the turbulent times, Loco's legacy is defined by his diplomacy and vision for the future of his people.
Name and Legacy Locoโ€™s Apache name was Jlin-tay-i-tith, meaning "Stops His Horse." While one theory suggests that he earned his nickname, โ€œLocoโ€ (Spanish for crazy), due to his supposed trust in white settlers, historians like Bud Shapard argue that Loco got the name for his bravery during a battle against the Mexicans, when he risked gunfire to save an injured warrior. This story was shared by Loco himself to John Gregory Bourke in 1882.
Leadership as Chief After the deaths of prominent Apache leaders like Cuchillo Negro and Mangas Coloradas, Loco emerged as a key leader of the Copper Mines Mimbreรฑo Apache. Along with Victorio, chief of the Warm Springs Mimbreรฑos, Loco worked to protect the rights and sovereignty of their people. Following the removal of the Mimbreรฑo reservation at Ojo Caliente, both Loco and Victorio led their people back to their homeland in protest of the U.S. Governmentโ€™s attempts to relocate them to the Mescalero reservation. However, Loco was eventually captured and could not join Victorio in his final battles.
Locoโ€™s Peace Advocacy Locoโ€™s peace efforts were evident when he refused to join forces with Geronimo in 1882, despite pressure. Instead, he chose to resist through guerilla warfare against Geronimoโ€™s militants, advocating for a peaceful resolution. His commitment to diplomacy was demonstrated in 1886, when he traveled to Washington, D.C. to negotiate on behalf of his people. Unfortunately, like Geronimo, he was imprisoned and exiled to Florida.
Legacy Unlike the more militant figures like Geronimo and Victorio, Loco's enduring legacy lies in his pursuit of peace. He was a strong advocate for education, and in 1884, he became the first chief to send his children to school at the San Carlos Agency. His son was also the first Apache to attend the Indian school in Alabama in 1889.
Discussion: Loco's dedication to peace, education, and the future of his people sets him apart as a significant leader in Apache history. What do you think about his approach to leadership compared to other Apache figures like Victorio or Geronimo? Letโ€™s keep the conversation going! Share your thoughts below!
