A group of 22 facial reanimation experts representing 12 countries and 4 specialties recently published 46 procedure-specific consensus recommendations for outcomes reporting after facial reanimation procedures. These recommendations address what data should be reported after different procedures, and when these data can be considered long-term. This standardization should facilitate comparative effectiveness research and improve patient care.

One of the most valuable aspects of this article is Toriumi’s detailed discussion of composite graft design and survival.

Rather than simply describing how to place a composite graft, Toriumi explains the biological principles that determine whether a graft succeeds or fails. Concepts such as vascular ingrowth distance, perichondrial overlap, recipient-site vascularity, and the perichondrial underlay technique are discussed in remarkable detail.

For surgeons interested in nasal reconstruction, this section alone is worth reading.

Kaya et al. evaluated the efficacy of a triple nerve transfer for flaccid facial paralysis in a cohort of 12 patients. Their technique involved targeted terminal branch coaptations. There was improved smile symmetry as identified with the Emotrics application. Additionally, increases in the FaCE score demonstrated improved patient-reported quality of life.

Knott et al performed 14 dissections in human anatomical specimens to determine if transection of the SCM perpendicular to the great auricular nerve point (GAP) could be performed without compromising the spinal accessory nerve.

Their findings confirm that GAP-guided transection of the SCM using a standard facelift incision is a feasible, nerve-sparing approach for lateral neck feminization - a previously unaddressed gap in gender-affirming facial surgery.

How does living in today’s age of ✨filters and feeds✨ influence our self-perception?

In a recent study by Most et.al, a total of 1,013 participants completed questionnaires assessing social media activity and screening for body dysmorphia disorder (BDD). Positive associations were identified between increased social media use, symptoms of body dysmorphia, and interest in cosmetic procedures.

These findings highlights the significant impact of social media on mental health and body image concerns. Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons play an important role in both raising awareness of this trend and appropriately screening patients in order to understand their motivations/expectations prior to surgery.

🎧 NEW PODCAST FEATURE
In this episode of About the Face, we explore the role of tranexamic acid (TXA) in facelift surgery through a split-face, multi-institutional study.
🔬 This rigorous study design allows for direct comparison within the same patient and demonstrates less postoperative ecchymosis on TXA-treated sides—highlighting TXA’s potential to improve recovery following rhytidectomy.
💡 Tune in for a high-yield discussion on: study design & outcomes, mechanisms of TXA, and clinical relevance for facial plastic surgeons
About the Face Podcast is a quick, convenient way to stay up to date and learn more about recent publications in the field.
