In December 1998, a common octopus with an astonishing 96 tentacles was captured in Matoya Bay, Japan. This unusual specimen had the typical 8 appendages, each of which branched out to create the extra tentacles. It survived for five months post-capture, even laying eggs that hatched into normal 8-tentacled octopi.
After its death, the 96-tentacled octopus was preserved and is now permanently displayed at the Shima Marineland Aquarium in Japan.
