At 15, my childhood sweetheart promised me 60 sunflowers on my 60th birthday—he passed away that year, but 45 years later, they appeared on my porch with a box that made me shake.
I was fifteen when Danny gave me my first sunflower.
We'd grown up three houses apart and had been best friends before either of us understood what being in love meant. That summer, while passing a roadside flower stand, I joked that when I turned sixty, I'd probably be an old woman nobody bought flowers for anymore.
Danny looked genuinely offended.
"Then I'll bring you sixty sunflowers. One for every year."
I laughed, but he made me shake on it.
We stayed together through high school and graduated three years later, already talking about college, marriage, and the little house we'd someday buy.

My porch was covered in sunflowers.
I counted them.

My knees weakened.
I never told anyone about Danny's promise. In forty-five years, I'd never spoken about it to anyone.
Then I noticed something behind the bouquet.
A weathered wooden box tied with a faded yellow ribbon.
I carried the box inside and sat at the kitchen table before carefully untying the ribbon. There was only one thing inside.
A folded note.
My fingers trembled so badly that it took me several attempts to unfold it.
When I read the first line, tears were already running down my face. I thought, "Oh no, is this a cruel joke?"
Before I could continue, a sound came from the front door.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Three slow, distinct knocks.
The note slipped from my fingers.
I slowly stood and walked toward the door.
When I finally wrapped my trembling fingers around the handle, my entire body was shaking.
I had no idea WHO was standing on the other side.
I drew a shaky breath... and pulled the door open..
