Wolfgang Tillmans
Into the Clearing
A year after taking over 6,000 square metres of the Centre Pompidou, Wolfgang Tillmans returns to Paris on a more intimate scale. Glade / Clairière, his new exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel, brings together photographs, video and sculpture around a deceptively simple motif: the line.
A fold in photographic paper, a beam of light, a railway track seen from a speeding train, droplets of water suspended in the air or, quite literally, vast loops of industrial rope laid across the gallery floor… Throughout the exhibition, lines appear, disappear and shift between accident and intention. Tillmans also returns to Lacanau, forty years after making one of his early defining images there, photographing himself again in 2026. The result feels less like a retrospective than a continuation: another attempt to understand how an image is made, and how much of what we see is constructed by our own gaze.
