My Wife, My Property 22
"Who was that?"
"It's him."
"Your husband?" Adaora asked, looking indignant.
"Yes," Caro replied casually.
Adaora felt less concerned.
She got back from work some minutes earlier. Adaora was usually not in a hurry to go home but she came back earlier that day because of Caro. Ada would stay back at her office working until she got tired.
She came home with some fresh food items for their dinner.
So, both of them were in the kitchen, preparing jollof rice. They had almost finished cooking but the water hadn't dried up from the pot of jollof rice.
They continued discussing as they waited for the food to be ready.
"Is he aware you are here?" Adaora continued.
"No."
"Better."
"I only informed him not to look for me because he's not aware that I left the house."
"It's ok, if I were you, my number wouldn't even be reachable to him by now. He should be thankful to God for the type of person he married."
"My dear, I'm beginning to regret being a good person. I have seen that some men don't like the home builder type of women. I have suffered because of him. If I tell you what I've been doing for this man you will pity me."
"Women should be home builders but they should use their senses. As they are building your men, they shouldn't lose themselves in the process, they should build themselves too, by doing so couples would appreciate each other's hard work and growth. The men wouldn't look down on them. Women should always remember who they were and who they were aspiring to become before they got married."
"I have lost myself, no doubt, Daniel drained me. I do most of his writing work on a weekly basis. You know his job involves more of report writing. I do that and would even follow it up to make sure he does well in the presentation so that his company wouldn't know he didn't write them himself."
"I was surprised to hear that you have no job. Was it because of those works that you refused to get yourself a job?"
"My sister, my husband was the one who said I shouldn't work."
"And you obeyed him."
"What will I do naw. I was trying to be a good wife. I don't even want to bring up the topic about writing for that his mistress."
"What? Are you serious about what you just said?'
"Yes, I didn't know before. He said it was a sample for teaching his junior colleagues on how to do a good report writing."
"My God!"
"I write those two different reports on a weekly basis. I was deceived and used by those two. If I had continued staying in that house, the thought of all these would make me lose my mind."
"It's ok my dear. It's well, you can stay here as long as you want."
"Thank you so much."
"I will get you a job as soon as possible, but I want you to have some rest and be happy first."
"Thank you so much."
While they were talking, Caro sniffed and detected that their food was beginning to burn. She informed Ada immediately and she turned off the fire.
After that, Ada dished out a good portion into two different plates. They carried one each and left for the living room.
The following day by 5 am in Daniel's bedroom, his alarm started ringing but he was already awake. He sluggishly picked up the phone and turned off the alarm but remained in the bed. He laid on his back and focused his gaze on his ceiling.
About an hour later, he forced himself out of bed and slowly walked out of the bedroom aimlessly.
He walked into the kitchen and it looked empty and forsaken just like his bedside. He turned and left for the bedroom again. As he got there, he went into the bathroom and stood before the sink.
He opened the tap and splashed some water on his face as if he were trying to wash away the fog of disbelief there. It had just dawned on him that Caro left her matrimonial home, he never believed she would have such a thing in mind after that issue he considered little.
After washing his face, he went back to the room and to his wardrobe to bring the clothes he would wear to work.
After that, he walked to his fridge in search of edibles. Luckily enough, he found a soft drink and a few slices of bread. He closed the fridge and went back to the bathroom.
Later, he got out of the bathroom dressed up and took the edibles dolorously.
Soon after, he left for work.
Later that morning, at Daniel's office, he couldn't concentrate at work. He was just thinking about his wife and the possibility of her return.
He then picked up his telephone and rang Funmi. When she picked up, he told her to come over to his office immediately.
In no time, Funmi arrived at his office.
"Is everything alright?" Funmi said softly.
"Dear, the worst has happened to me."
"What happened?"
"My wife ... my wife left me yesterday."
Funmi was shocked and confused.
"This is what I've been afraid of all this while," Daniel continued lamenting.
"But why..... umm, ok.. I'm sorry about that, I understand how you feel. This is all my fault. How do we make her come back?" Funmi said understandably.
"I don't know. She only sent me a text message that I shouldn't look for her, that she's in a safe place."
"Maybe she went to her father's house."
"No, I don't think so. Her parents would have called me. I don't want to be the one to inform them about the issues we are having."
"Where then did she go to? Maybe she has a man-friend."
"No, she doesn't."
"Remember you said she doesn't have any friends."
Daniel was quiet but still looking worried.
"OK, let's pray and hope she comes back. I was doing something when you called me."
"OK. You can go back. I just wanted to tell you what's happening to me."
"OK."
Funmi left.
At her workspace, she sat down looking furious while focusing her gaze on the computer screen on her table. She was reflecting on what just happened at Daniel's office.
"I don't understand this man at all. He made me believe he never wanted his wife, why is he now bothered about her leaving? Anyway, for me, it is the best news so far. I will never let this opportunity pass me by. I will grab it with my two hands. Everything is turning around for my good," she thought.
She was a bit relieved and started scrolling through the computer.
