My Wife, My Property 22

"Who was that?"

"It's him."

"Your husband?" Adaora asked, looking indignant.

"Yes," Caro replied casually.

Adaora felt less concerned.

She got back from work some minutes earlier. Adaora was usually not in a hurry to go home but she came back earlier that day because of Caro. Ada would stay back at her office working until she got tired.

She came home with some fresh food items for their dinner.

So, both of them were in the kitchen, preparing jollof rice. They had almost finished cooking but the water hadn't dried up from the pot of jollof rice.

They continued discussing as they waited for the food to be ready.

"Is he aware you are here?" Adaora continued.

"No."

"Better."

"I only informed him not to look for me because he's not aware that I left the house."

"It's ok, if I were you, my number wouldn't even be reachable to him by now. He should be thankful to God for the type of person he married."

"My dear, I'm beginning to regret being a good person. I have seen that some men don't like the home builder type of women. I have suffered because of him. If I tell you what I've been doing for this man you will pity me."

"Women should be home builders but they should use their senses. As they are building your men, they shouldn't lose themselves in the process, they should build themselves too, by doing so couples would appreciate each other's hard work and growth. The men wouldn't look down on them. Women should always remember who they were and who they were aspiring to become before they got married."

"I have lost myself, no doubt, Daniel drained me. I do most of his writing work on a weekly basis. You know his job involves more of report writing. I do that and would even follow it up to make sure he does well in the presentation so that his company wouldn't know he didn't write them himself."

"I was surprised to hear that you have no job. Was it because of those works that you refused to get yourself a job?"

"My sister, my husband was the one who said I shouldn't work."

"And you obeyed him."

"What will I do naw. I was trying to be a good wife. I don't even want to bring up the topic about writing for that his mistress."

"What? Are you serious about what you just said?'

"Yes, I didn't know before. He said it was a sample for teaching his junior colleagues on how to do a good report writing."

"My God!"

"I write those two different reports on a weekly basis. I was deceived and used by those two. If I had continued staying in that house, the thought of all these would make me lose my mind."

"It's ok my dear. It's well, you can stay here as long as you want."

"Thank you so much."

"I will get you a job as soon as possible, but I want you to have some rest and be happy first."

"Thank you so much."

While they were talking, Caro sniffed and detected that their food was beginning to burn. She informed Ada immediately and she turned off the fire.

After that, Ada dished out a good portion into two different plates. They carried one each and left for the living room.

The following day by 5 am in Daniel's bedroom, his alarm started ringing but he was already awake. He sluggishly picked up the phone and turned off the alarm but remained in the bed. He laid on his back and focused his gaze on his ceiling.

About an hour later, he forced himself out of bed and slowly walked out of the bedroom aimlessly.

He walked into the kitchen and it looked empty and forsaken just like his bedside. He turned and left for the bedroom again. As he got there, he went into the bathroom and stood before the sink.

He opened the tap and splashed some water on his face as if he were trying to wash away the fog of disbelief there. It had just dawned on him that Caro left her matrimonial home, he never believed she would have such a thing in mind after that issue he considered little.

After washing his face, he went back to the room and to his wardrobe to bring the clothes he would wear to work.

After that, he walked to his fridge in search of edibles. Luckily enough, he found a soft drink and a few slices of bread. He closed the fridge and went back to the bathroom.

Later, he got out of the bathroom dressed up and took the edibles dolorously.

Soon after, he left for work.

Later that morning, at Daniel's office, he couldn't concentrate at work. He was just thinking about his wife and the possibility of her return.

He then picked up his telephone and rang Funmi. When she picked up, he told her to come over to his office immediately.

In no time, Funmi arrived at his office.

"Is everything alright?" Funmi said softly.

"Dear, the worst has happened to me."

"What happened?"

"My wife ... my wife left me yesterday."

Funmi was shocked and confused.

"This is what I've been afraid of all this while," Daniel continued lamenting.

"But why..... umm, ok.. I'm sorry about that, I understand how you feel. This is all my fault. How do we make her come back?" Funmi said understandably.

"I don't know. She only sent me a text message that I shouldn't look for her, that she's in a safe place."

"Maybe she went to her father's house."

"No, I don't think so. Her parents would have called me. I don't want to be the one to inform them about the issues we are having."

"Where then did she go to? Maybe she has a man-friend."

"No, she doesn't."

"Remember you said she doesn't have any friends."

Daniel was quiet but still looking worried.

"OK, let's pray and hope she comes back. I was doing something when you called me."

"OK. You can go back. I just wanted to tell you what's happening to me."

"OK."

Funmi left.

At her workspace, she sat down looking furious while focusing her gaze on the computer screen on her table. She was reflecting on what just happened at Daniel's office.

"I don't understand this man at all. He made me believe he never wanted his wife, why is he now bothered about her leaving? Anyway, for me, it is the best news so far. I will never let this opportunity pass me by. I will grab it with my two hands. Everything is turning around for my good," she thought.

She was a bit relieved and started scrolling through the computer.

⸝

The air inside the theater was electric.

Chinenye and Brianna stood on opposite sides of the stage, ready to battle for the ultimate prize.

The Global Dance Champion title was within reach.

But only one of them could win.

The music began.

⸝

A Performance of Passion and Power

Chinenye moved first, her body flowing with the rhythm of her soul. Every step told her story—the village, the struggles, the dream that had carried her to this moment.

Brianna countered with flawless technique, her spins and leaps defying gravity. She embodied discipline, hard work, and perfection.

It was raw passion versus polished skill.

But something magical happened.

They weren’t just competing.

They were dancing as if the stage was their destiny.

The audience held its breath.

This wasn’t just a competition—it was history being made.

⸝

The Final Pose

As the last note played, both dancers landed their final movements—Chinenye’s arms outstretched, her face toward the sky; Brianna frozen in a stunning pose of elegance.

Silence.

Then—thunderous applause.

The audience erupted.

The judges stood.

Tears filled Chinenye’s eyes.

They had given everything.

Now, the decision was out of their hands.

Who would win?

"Don't say that, my daughter; I wasn't aware of what you were going through then. I was just trying to caution you as a mother would do to her beloved daughter," Caro's mother sounded compassionately over the phone.

"OK mama," Caro responded with her phone on her ear. She was seated on a couch in Adaora's living room.

"You said I should not call him concerning what you had told us. Your father is very angry with him."

"Mama, I don't want you people to tell him anything about me. I'm not ready to go back to him, I'm done with him. Let him enjoy his new pregnant wife," Caro said harshly.

"Hmmm, I am sorry about everything, my daughter. I hope you are fine where you are because I would like you to come home."

"I'm fine here, I don't want to come home yet."

"Ok, always remember that we are strongly behind you."

"Thanks, mama."

"I'll talk to you later."

"OK, my regards to papa."

"He will hear."

She ended the call.

She was alone in the living room and the television was playing though without an audible sound. By then, Adaora had gone to work then.

Caro looked better and more beautiful than when she was worrying and crying her heart out about her husband.

Before then, Caro had informed her parents of all that happened between her and Daniel as well as her decision.
It was then that they came to terms with her and understood the problem from her perspective.

"I thank God that my parents support me fully this time around. At least I wouldn't go back to tolerating ru*bbish in the name of marriage. Mtcheeew."

Caro picked up the television remote from the table, increased the volume of the television and focused her attention there.

That same day at Daniel's office, Daniel suddenly got off his office chair as if it felt hot. He started pacing around slowly and worriedly.

He had submitted the compiled work of his subordinates'' report to his superior but was yet to be called for any complaint.

Since his wife didn't come back as he had expected, he put up some words and submitted it that way.

He knew he didn't do any better in the report and was expecting his superior to call his attention.

He had rehearsed a cover-up story to tell his boss in case he complained about his work.

It was then 3:15 pm, almost 4 hours since he submitted the report, but the man had yet to call him, let alone complain. He became worried and couldn't concentrate on anything.

At that moment, his mind was occupied with what he submitted and the expected reaction of his boss.

After pacing around for some minutes, he went back to his seat and waited more but he couldn't lay his hand on any work.

He continued that way till the close of work and the man was yet to react.

Daniel stayed back in his office, waiting to know if his boss would come or call but after some minutes, he learnt that he had gone home.

"Should I call and ask him about the report? No, I know he saw it, but why is he quiet? Because if he didn't see it, he would have disturbed me to submit it. I know I didn't do it well at all, why is he not reacting?"

After that, Daniel packed his items into his bag and left the office.

As the day went by, Daniel's boss still didn't ask him anything. The man went about his usual office activities like nothing changed.

That his reaction was silently draining Daniel. He was gradually becoming uncomfortable at his workplace. He felt something was going on underground. He eavesdrops on office gossip to know whether his name will be mentioned.

Every other person in the office went about their usual activities but Daniel was not himself anymore. Even other works he's submitting to his boss no longer attract corrections like before. It seemed the man had left him behind.

Another week came for the report and Daniel did what he knew and submitted. His boss didn't react still.

Daniel became frustrated.

He picked up his phone, got Caro's number and started typing a message angrily.

:Why are you being so hear*tless and unreasonable? You promised on the altar of God to be with me through thick and thin but you left because of a little misunderstanding. Your unreasonable behaviour is about to cost me something very important to me. See what you make me go through. If you still have feelings for me, better come back now.:

After typing the message, he pressed send but the message returned, showing not delivered.

He pressed send again and it still showed not delivered. He checked his airtime and it was still enough. He tried sending the message more times, but it was still the same.

"Why can't I send messages to her? What is happening? (Pause) If I lose this job, I will never be happy with her if she comes back."

A couple of days later, in the evening at Adaora's place, Caro had finished making dinner and was relaxing in the living room, waiting for her friend to come back.

Soon after, Adaora got home and Caro welcomed her.

"What is this I'm perceiving?" Adaora said, sniffing.

"I made nsala soup and semo."

"Really? Let me keep my bag."

Adaora quickly left for the room while Caro went to the kitchen to get the food.

Soon after, both of them got back into the living room. Caro came with the food in a tray with a bowl of water. She kept the tray on a stool, they washed their hands in the bowl and they sat down to eat.

They discussed as they ate.

"Caro, would you like to work outside Lagos?" Adaora asked

"Yes, if I see the opportunity, I'll love it. It would even help me to stay far away from that man."

They laughed.

"My company opened a new branch at Portharcourt and they are looking for those to employ there. I recommend you for one of the best positions there. If you are interested, you will require a training."

Caro quickly stopped eating and stood up in excitement.

"Adaora, I'm interested. I am ready. When do I start?"

"I'll need your credentials for submission first."

"I have them here, they have always been in my box. Let me get them."

"Wait, Caro! Let's finish eating first."

While she was still talking, Caro rushed into the bedroom where she slept and later came out with an envelope.

"Everything you need is here. Adaora! You are my godsent. What would I have done without you? Thank you so much."

"Come let's continue eating.."

"No, I don't want to eat again. I have lost my appetite. May God bless you, my friend."

"It's ok."

Adaora continued eating while Caro stood in one corner waiting for her.

"I can't let this embarr**assment continue... I will never be a fai*lure in this company, never!"

Daniel muttered and heaved a sigh of relief immediately he got into his office.

He was a bit relieved from all the tension after his superior told him to go. He considered himself lucky for scaling through.

His superior was a no-nonsense man. It's probably Daniel's input from his perceived hard work and intelligence that saved him. If it were another person, the person would answer multiple queries even after presenting a better writeup.

As Daniel had considered himself lucky that day, he wasn't sure of what would befall him another day.

He went and sat at the edge of his table.

"Mr Tanko actually believed that everything wasn't alright with me. Let me also put it that everything wasn't alright with me. I must come up with a better compilation after the next presentation so that I can retain my reputation here. They mustn't find out that someone is doing the work for me."

Daniel then got up and started arranging his space which looked scattered from the tension he was in earlier.

After that, he packed some of his items into his bag and left the office.

It was then that he noticed that Funmi wasn't in the office. She didn't come to work at all. Daniel didn't bother to know why, he just rushed home to cool his head.

Later that day, when he had gotten to his house and had freshened up. He lay down in his bed and suddenly started missing his wife.

"I need Caro to come back before the next presentation. I will do anything possible to bring her back to this house. (Pause)... What if she finds out that Funmi comes to spend the night here sometimes?.... No, she won't find out and even if she decides to come, I won't let her see Funmi."

He promised to bring his wife back no matter what it takes.

The following day, in the evening, at Daniel's house, Funmi arrived with a food flask and her handbag. Daniel was already back from work then.

Both of them exchanged greetings jovially and were seated on the couch.

"Funmi, what is this news I'm hearing?" Daniel asked, looking surprised.

Funmi smiled.

"So, it's true, I didn't want to call you on the phone because I know you will come around."

"Yes, I just decided to resign peacefully."

"Why? I hope it's not because of the report writing."

"Not at all. I've been wanting to do this. The job is becoming stressful to me especially now that I'm pregnant."

"I'm so sorry. This is all my fault."

"It's nothing. It's one of the sacrifices of being a mother."

"But you are supposed to give them one month's notice before stopping work."

"I'm not doing again... Is it by force to stay at GT groups?"

They laughed hysterically.

"As you sacr**ificed your job because of me, I'll take care of all your needs," Daniel promised.

"Awnnnn, thanks, darling."

"You are welcome."

After that, Funmi left for the kitchen to get plates for the food she brought.

Later, she slept over at his place.

The following morning, Daniel prepared and left for work while Funmi stayed back. She told him that she would leave later in the day.

Later, when Daniel got to his office, he dropped his bag and sat down. Before he could do anything, he brought out his phone to call his wife.
It seemed the office reminded him of his wife again.

"If I call her, she wouldn't pick up. Let me send her a text message, if she doesn't reply I'll know what to do."

He started typing the message; ...Good morning my love, how are you doing? I would have called but you may not pick my call. I know you are still angry with me and I understand. I am deeply sorry for making you feel ba*d. Please forgive me and return to the house. I have realised what it means to stay without you, you are the air I breathe. I'm suffering here. Please come back to me. I know all the effort you put into bringing me this far, I will never neglect you again, and I will value each of your efforts in making me a better person. Your type is rare and I will forever appreciate you. Please come back to me if you still want me to be alive. I love you with all my heart.....

After typing that long message, he sent it and it was quickly delivered.

He started expecting her response immediately but he was disappointed.
He waited more and she didn't reply to the message.
He called her number but she didn't pick up.

"I don't know anyone she calls her friend, in fact she has no friends. I think I have to involve her parents now. She must come back to the house as soon as possible."

Daniel then got Caro's mother's number on his phone and dialled it at once.

It rang once and she picked up the call.

"Good morning mama."

"Good morning my son, how are you doing?" Mama replied over the phone.

"I'm fine mama."

"How is your wife?"

"Fine.. but.."

"But what?" Mama said, sounding worried.

"I.. I... we.. we had a little misunderstanding and she left the house since last week."

"What? And you never told us."

"I was feeling guilty about it and I also wanted to resolve it without involving you people but it's getting out of hand. I have begged her for forgiveness several times but she won't just let go."

"Ah ah, she didn't tell me all these and I spoke with her yesterday."

"Yesterday?"

"Yes."

"I hope she's fine. I'm missing her and I can't wait for her to come back to me."

"She was fine. Where did she go to?"

"I don't know."

"OK, don't worry, I will call her."

"Thank you so much, mama. I will be the happiest person in the whole world if she comes back to me. I am so worried about her wellbeing."

"She will come back, oh."

"Ok, mama."

"I will tell you her response after speaking with her."

"Thank you, mama. Have a nice day."

"Bye-bye, my son."

Daniel ended the call and smiled.
