Two tug boats gently push the USS Cole (DDG 67) to its mooring at Pier 4 of the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., on Dec. 24, 2000. The Arleigh Burke class destroyer was the target of a terrorist attack in the port of Aden, Yemen, on Oct. 12, 2000, during a scheduled refueling. The attack killed 17 crew members and injured 39 others. The Cole was transported from Aden to Pascagoula by the Norwegian heavy transport ship M/V Blue Marlin. A 60 foot by 60 foot patch was welded to the hull of the destroyer before it was off loaded from the Blue Marlin.

Carriers bring the air power, subs bring stealth and strike… but destroyers bring the shield. They protect the group from missiles, planes, subs, and small boats, all while firing their own long-range weapons.

If you had to keep only one type of ship in a dangerous area, would you still choose the carrier, or is the destroyer actually the MVP? Drop your take in the comments! 👇
