Why are AI leaders calling for a slowdown?

On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei made headlines by publishing an essay arguing that AI technology is advancing at an unsafe pace and should be moderated. Shortly later, other AI CEOs like Sam Altman (OpenAI) and Elon Musk (SpaceXAI) echoed his sentiments.

The announcements come after AI systems have allegedly hacked other companies’ platforms without their immediate knowledge, and former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon announced his resignation, citing the company’s purportedly insufficient AI-safety policies.

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was seen publicly for the first time since his June hospitalization as he left his Washington D.C. home to return to the Senate floor for votes.

Major questions about McConnell’s health first arose in July 2023, when the senator abruptly stopped speaking while answering a reporter’s question and remained frozen for an extended period; he had a similar incident later that summer. Since then, McConnell has had multiple falls — some in public — resulting in serious injuries (he has said a childhood bout of polio has hindered his movements in adulthood). In February, he was hospitalized for over a week with what his staff called “flu-like symptoms.”

On June 14, McConnell was again hospitalized; earlier in the day, emergency responders reported performing CPR on an individual experiencing cardiac arrest at the senator’s Washington residence, though they did not confirm that it was McConnell. McConnell described the cause of the hospitalization as a “fall” on social media, saying that his doctors determined he did not suffer a heart attack or a stroke.

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) said that he would not run for president against former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2028 during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Newsom, who many consider to be a frontrunner to become Democrats’ next nominee, was asked how he is going about determining whether he will run to lead the country. The governor said that it depended on what his four kids wanted him to do and who else was running for the nomination.

Former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (WV) said in an interview on CNBC that he would campaign for Senator Susan Collins (R) in Maine as she seeks reelection.

Manchin described Collins as the “soul of the Senate” and said that he would campaign for her in Maine.

The Democrat turned Independent also praised Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate for Senate in Michigan. Manchin said that he would not be comfortable with Abdul El-Sayed — Rogers’s Democratic opponent — as a Senator.

Manchin left the Democratic party in his final months as a Senator and has since launched an organization to try to elect more independents to office.

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) introduced Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) in a video during today’s Republican midterm convention.

Fetterman and McCormick have formed an unlikely, interparty alliance in recent months. In that time, they’ve worked together to staff a booth for Pennsylvania at the “Great American State Fair” and formed a joint fundraising committee.

Fetterman said he was speaking to the convention because he was “a common sense Democrat,” and described McCormick as the “kind of senator that gets the job done.”

While attending a fair in Ohio, an armed suspect “lunged at” Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, per a statement released by her campaign. The suspect injured multiple people according to the statement. However, news reports and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine say that Acton was unharmed. The suspect was arrested with multiple weapons according to Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Chris Anderson.

The campaign for Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, her opponent in the election, released a statement saying that “Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence. What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics, and we hope no one was hurt.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) also released a statement saying he is “thankful” Acton was not hurt. He also said that the case will be investigated thoroughly by law enforcement.

The judge in the Lindsay Clancy case has officially declared a mistrial. The decision comes following the defense filing an emergency appeal to request a stay of his decision.

That request for a stay was denied by Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Dalila Argaez Wendlandt.

Clancy has admitted to strangling her three children, but the defense has argued she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. A mistrial is neither an acquittal or conviction, and prosecutors will be able to bring Clancy to trial again with a new jury, should they wish.

The jury sent a note this morning reading “it is with heavy heart we are still unable to come to a decision and will not be able to.” The judge previously refused to remove a juror who appeared to be the holdout against acquitting Clancy.

During today’s press briefing Vice President JD Vance was asked why he was going to New York City on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 instead of President Trump, and if it was due to security concerns with the Iran war.

Vance responded that he was not aware of any security concerns, but that he’d check with the Secret Service. Instead, he said that he and Trump decided to be at different places so they could maximize the number of places the two could be. He said Trump will be attending a commemorative event at the Pentagon, which was another target during the 9/11 attacks.

At the end of the response, he appeared to make a joke about spending time with former President Joe Biden. “I’m also, as you guys could probably guess, I’m really looking forward to hanging out with Joe Biden. I’m sure that we’ll have many, many intense intellectual conversations,” Vance said. “And it’ll be great. We’ll have a great time with the presidents.”

All the living former presidents will be in attendance.
