Smells like Radiolab Live. From the bowels of hell, comes an odor of death and decay, a scent that has long been known throughout human history as the sign of doom.

Join us for a live taping of Radiolab Presents: Viscera on Wednesday, August 26th at Caveat (Caveat). We’ll experience a horrid mystery element from the hospital room to the battlefield, and from inside your head to the farthest reaches of space. For as long as she could remember, Amy loved meat in all its glorious cuts and marbled flavors. And then one day, for seemingly no reason, her body wouldn’t tolerate it. No steaks. No brisket. No weenies. It made no sense: why couldn’t she eat something that she had routinely enjoyed for decades?

It turned out Amy was not alone. And the answer to her mysterious allergy involved maps, a dancing lone star tick, and a very particular sugar called Alpha Gal.

Looking for something to do this weekend? Radiolab has a FREE live show with all sorts of stories about fruit in NYC. It’s at Little Island (in The Glade) at 5:00 p.m. every night, Fri July 31, Sat Aug 1, and Sun Aug 2. No tickets needed, just show up!

We’ll have all sorts of stories about fruit, both scientific and evolutionary, but also deeply human and personal and poetic. We’ll also have live musical accompaniment by RAFIQ BHATIA of Son Lux and even some fruit you can try yourself (that you’ve probably never tasted before).

As for Salim: you can normally find him on the corner of Columbus and 68th Ave – EXCEPT right now he is in Morocco and will be back in mid-September.

Oh boy are we PUTTING ON A SHOW! Six shows, actually! And you can come, FOR FREE, to The Glade at Little Island in NYC.

The first week: Three performances of a show we’re calling “Fruit Fantasia.” We have a story about the ancient history inside a banana Laffy Taffy, the science behind how we can eat fruits year-round, and some beautiful, poetic love letters to fruit. Hosted by Matt Kielty, with special guests Ben Shattuck, Mona Pirnot, Dan Pashman, Dr. Nadia Berenstein, and Kendra Vaculin. Plus, we’re so excited to have RAFIQ BHATIA accompany us with LIVE music.

The second week: Three performances of “Grass Fed,” hosted by Molly Webster. Journey through all five senses to re-examine the thing right under our feet. And discover how grass—yes grass—is the largest food item in the world.

We’ll have live music, fruit for you to try, and partnerships with food vendors who are cooking up something special just for us.

Totally FREE and no tickets needed. Each show is at 5:00 p.m. The first week is July 31st-August 2nd. The second week will be August 14th-16th. Put it in your calendars!

Lauren Brown gets goosebumps. A lot. Sometimes several times a day. When her partner, writer Carmen Maria Machado, noticed it, she couldn't stop thinking about it. Why does she get them in so many different situations? What’s happening in her body and what does it mean? We take that question and run with it. We face chilly winds, sudden frights and moments when the world seem to shift under your feet to figure out what the little bumps on our skin might be trying to tell us.

Back in the 1950s, facing the threat of nuclear annihilation, federal officials sat down and pondered what American life would actually look like after an atomic attack. They faced a slew of practical questions like: Who would count the dead and where would they build the refugee camps? But they faced a more spiritual question as well. If Washington DC were hit, every object in the the National Archives would be eviscerated in a moment. Terrified by this reality, they set out to save some of America’s most precious stuff.

Today, we look back at the items our Cold War era planners sought to save and we ask the question: What objects would we preserve now?

Is this the most extreme version of exposure therapy that you’ve ever heard of? Would YOU do something like this? 🫣🪳

It’s not exactly that Alex has entomophobia. Other bugs don’t freak her out. It’s just cockroaches that make her scared.

Alex started to wonder what might be behind her fear, and if she could do anything overcome it. So, she asked Chef Joseph Yoon from Brooklyn Bugs to cook her and the Radiolab team a bug feast.
