someone parked a full food truck inside the 9th avenue protected bike lane. not beside it. not partially. inside it. both wheels within the green paint boundary. lunch queue standing in the bike lane. generator running. "BEST TACOS IN NYC" in the window.

the gap between the truck's passenger mirror and the imperfectly parked sedan's left mirror was handlebar-plus-six-inches at mirror level and i was already committed before i finished measuring it.

both mirrors at handlebar height simultaneously โ€” truck mirror left, sedan mirror right, the gap at its tightest in the middle, the truck's generator at full volume directly beside the left ear at closest approach. clean exit. the truck driver's face in the passenger mirror paused mid-bag-handover for exactly the duration of a man who has seen something in his mirror and decided it doesn't require him to stop completing a transaction.

the lycra cyclist was stopped behind the truck with his foot down on the green paint, garmin still recording, full assessment made, gap declined. he watched the exit through the gap he declined and his face was doing several things at once. his garmin is recording a stationary data point on 9th avenue right now and that stationary point has context that garmin cannot capture.

the dot worker at the lamp post lowered his clipboard one inch watching the exit and then raised it and started writing. he has written this note before. he will write it again.

the citi bike woman started rolling toward the gap right after i cleared it. her helmet was slightly askew. i believe in her.

the food truck is still there.

tag someone who has been the lycra cyclist in this situation. comment "BOTH MIRRORS" if the simultaneous clearance made your palms sweat. wait for the truck driver finishing the transaction in the mirror โ€” that bag handover completing is the full review. double-tap if the DOT worker writing on his clipboard at the end got you. ๐ŸŒฎ๐Ÿšด๐ŸŸข๐Ÿ˜ค

jackson heights roosevelt avenue on a sunday morning under the 7 train elevated structure is not a street. it is a full south asian market corridor operating in alternating stripes of el shadow and direct sun with a devotional procession turning in from the side street and a 7 train vibrating through every surface simultaneously and incense smoke drifting across the travel line at handlebar height in a shadow zone.

the shadow-sun strobe from the column grid above the whole time โ€” every few feet the camera lurches between cool shadow and overexposed sun and your eyes just adapt because the market is too full to look up.

the incense smoke diagonal in the next shadow zone. sandalwood and rose. the brass holder on the el column. the lakshmi image beside it catching the shadow light. the haze in the autofocus for one second before the next sun stripe cleared it.

the produce basket woman's crossing committed line with five feet of green mango basket width above her head โ€” she does not adjust her crossing line because her balance does not permit lateral adjustment and that is entirely correct. one mango shifted through the basket weave from the air. her eyes stayed on her balance point.

the delivery cyclist's food app logo autofocusing through his insulated box corner at shoulder height. that man has seen this corridor from the opposite direction many times and his expression said so.

and then the palanquin. full width across the corridor. marigold garland at handlebar height. i threaded the leading pole before the rear pole completed the entry and the garland brushed the right grip and one petal came off and was in the frame for one full second before i left it behind. the dhol never stopped. the diya flames kept moving. the procession filled the corridor behind me.

the chai vendor at the next el column. cardamom smell layering over the incense. the next 7 train's rumble starting in the steel structure thirty seconds before it appeared. roosevelt avenue giving you everything it has and not apologising for the vol

manhattan chinatown on a sunday afternoon at 1:15pm is not a neighbourhood. it is canal street operating at full simultaneous capacity with a wedding arriving at mott street and a dim sum cart crossing and four mahjong elders with their chairs in the travel line and a mooncake festival stall at the intersection corner and ankle-height aerator tubing between every seafood cart base and no one has communicated with anyone else and it works perfectly.

the aerator tube web between the cart bases โ€” reading the cart positions rather than the tubes, threading the centreline, blue crab through the tank water for one frame at handlebar height. the mahjong elder's backward stretch step landed in the space i just cleared and the tile shuffle never stopped. one seated player tracked me from above his tiles with fifty years of canal street peripheral awareness and then went back to his hand.

the dim sum cart woman did not adjust her pace. i threaded in front of her committed line and the steam wisp from the lid edge was warm on the grip for one second and she never looked at me because i did the correct thing and she knew it.

the red paper lantern brushed the camera housing and the tassel swung and the vendor's hand went to the canopy frame and the mooncake boxes did not move.

and then the wedding intersection. grandparent couple clearing the town car bumper. gap opening for exactly the right number of seconds. the photographer's wireless flash pole at head height above my left grip. the flash fired at full power directly into the camera at close range. one frame. pure white. the most dramatic single frame in the entire series. and that man was shooting the bride and accidentally got whatever i am instead.

the three roast ducks in the window for one second as i cleared the intersection. amber glaze. afternoon sun through the glass. that one frame is canal street giving you its most chinatown possible image as a parting gift before the bridge shadow takes the block.
the manhattan bridge shadow at the end. cool and grey after the whole sun run. canal street still going behind in cantonese.

tag someone who thinks chinatown is a place you go for soup dumplings and nothing else. comment "WHITE FLASH" if the photographer's unit firing into the lens was your moment. wait for the dim sum cart woman never looking at the rider โ€” that non-look is the highest possible acknowledgment. double-tap if the three glazed ducks in the window for one frame got you. ๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿšด๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฆ†

dumbo on a sunday afternoon under the manhattan bridge anchorage with a film crew in the arch and a brooklyn flea market running across the belgian block and the brooklyn bridge framed through the arch in golden east river light is not a plaza. it is the most photographed obstacle course in brooklyn operating at full summer capacity.

the vintage print stack corner knocked a belgian block from the air displacement โ€” wooden knock, autofocus to the frame texture, already at the record rack. the rack was mid-rotation โ€” threaded the gap between the current position and the next quarter-turn, the divider tab cleared the right grip by the width of one vinyl record, and the vendor reached forward with one hand to slow it while his other hand had a price sticker mid-application. that man has two tracks running simultaneously at all times.

the red flannel sleeve at handlebar height brushed the left grip and swung out on the hanger and the click on the rod was audible. the phone-checker backed into the travel line mid-step and stepped into the space i just vacated. the local woman read the convergence from two seconds out โ€” body shifted left, coffee cup raised in the protect-the-drink instinct, eyes on the camera for one frame. that is a dumbo local. that is someone who has navigated this corridor before.

the film crew arch threshold. production assistant sign saying please wait one at a time clearing my left grip. director's slow head-turn tracking the exit. boom operator pulling the pole one inch upward by reflex. and the film crew's slider camera accidentally tracking me through the arch on its rail because i was moving through the frame at the exact moment it was live.

the arch exit. anchorage shadow to full east river gold in one frame. brooklyn bridge cables. manhattan across the river in afternoon haze. water street in direct sun after the whole shadow run. brooklyn giving you everything through one arch as the reward.

tag someone who does dumbo on sundays and thinks the flea market is the main event. comment "O

atlanta beltline eastside trail on a sunday afternoon in georgia summer heat is not a multi-use trail. it is a compressed converted rail corridor where yoga class, mural tour group, food truck queue, and inline skaters are all operating simultaneously in the same width and none of them have communicated with each other.

the warrior pose forward arm was extended into the centreline at handlebar height โ€” threaded left, the nail polish on the nearest hand visible for one frame, the instructor stepped onto the centreline as i cleared and tracked me mid-cue. the left-side inline skater's arm swing has a three-foot lateral reach on each balance correction โ€” timed the overtake to the left arm moment, the right swing caught the trailing air after i was through and the wobble recovery was a wide left arm correction and an over-the-shoulder look that created its own wobble. the mural tour backward photographer stepped onto the centreline mid-reverse, froze with both feet down and camera still up, and the atlanta phoenix mural in orange and red was directly behind them in the gap their step created. one frame. art and obstacle simultaneously.

the korean bbq boy's insulated cup was at chest height above my left grip when his attention came off the menu board. lid held. hands tightened. not one drop. his queue-mates did the sequential head-turn watching me clear the diagonal.

the tunnel. georgia sun cutting off in one frame. led cool blue hitting the mural walls. traffic rumble from ponce de leon through the structure into the handlebars. and then the exit โ€” sun returning full, ponce city market rising above, the ferris wheel against georgia blue, midtown atlanta in summer haze beyond. the beltline giving you the city as the reward.

tag someone who does the beltline on sundays and thinks it's a mellow rail trail. comment "NAIL POLISH" if the warrior pose clearance was your moment. wait for the phoenix mural and the frozen photographer in the same frame โ€” that one second is everything. double-tap if the tunnel exit ferris

denver 16th street mall at 3pm on a saturday has decided to run every possible downtown obstacle on the same red granite paver block simultaneously in high-altitude sunshine that is genuinely a different category of bright than anywhere else in this series.

the union station shadow-to-sun exposure lurch in one frame. the farmers market volunteer dragging tent stakes across the pavers mid-grip-shift โ€” metal tips passed the left pedal at ground level, the drag-mark across the red granite, the volunteer's alarm face. bike-share crew member one crossing with a wide-handlebar bike that stopped abruptly with the front wheel briefly pointing at my exit. bike-share crew member two coming out of the van simultaneously from a different angle โ€” the second bike's handlebar swept right as they caught their momentum and cleared my left grip from behind and the radio crackled from their vest at close range with a dispatch message i will never know the contents of.

the light rail crossing with the gate arm at forty-five degrees and descending โ€” angled right to maximise perpendicular, front tyre ring on track one, ring on track two, gate thud behind the rear wheel. the skateboarder in the crowd ring gap leaning right instinctively when i came alongside him and his board following the lean and widening the gap โ€” that is two rolling people reading the same geometry simultaneously and it was smooth.

the electric shuttle driver nodded through the windshield as the mirror passed my left at arm's distance. one nod. composed. professional. a person who runs this route all day and has added this to his saturday.

the colorado blue above the building canyon the whole time. that specific cloudless 5280-feet blue. denver giving you the sky as the constant backdrop for everything that just happened.

tag someone who thinks denver is a mellow cycling city. comment "GATE THUD" if the crossing timing made your stomach drop. wait for the skateboarder's lean widening the gap โ€” two rolling people, one shared decision. double-tap if the shuttle

philadelphia old city on a saturday afternoon has decided to run every possible colonial-era obstacle simultaneously on the same herringbone cobblestone block.

the amish cart delivery diagonal across two-thirds of the width โ€” threaded right through the corn husks that had fallen during unloading, irregular surface under the tyre, the cheese wheel on top cleared the left grip close enough that the autofocus pulled to the cheesecloth, and the suspenders man turned around after the crate was delivered and i was already at the pretzel cart. the pretzel umbrella pinch between the pole and the building face โ€” the customer's arm pulled back as i went under their reach and the vendor looked up with the face of a man who has been operating in old city for years and is at threshold.

the intersection. carriage horse on the left, mounted police horse diagonal across on the right, park ranger's bicycle handlebar in the centre gap. threaded between the carriage horse's right shoulder and the ranger's handlebar simultaneously โ€” the horse's ear rotated toward the bike sound and the body held. the ranger's sentence stopped mid-word. the mounted officer's hand went to the radio and then came back down. one assessment, one correct decision.

the mounted horse's tail flicked once in my wake. unbothered. that animal works old city saturdays and has seen everything.

the assembling drum circle โ€” ring not yet closed, gaps between individual positions still readable, threaded through between the djembe stand leg and the frame drum player still walking to their spot. one established drummer hit their instrument once after i cleared. one hit. bounced off the colonial brick. i choose to believe it was appreciative.

the reading terminal alley shadow at the end. two degrees cooler. smooth asphalt after the entire herringbone block. philadelphia giving you shade as the reward.

tag someone who thinks independence hall is the most chaotic part of old city. comment "EAR ROTATE" if the carriage horse's ear tracking got you. wait for the mount

fremont street at midnight on a saturday is not a pedestrian mall. it is a full sensory maximum โ€” LED canopy running a light show overhead, live band on the left, zip-line launching every ninety seconds above, silver robot in the centre with his arms out, vegas elvis working the queue, and the canopy colour shifts updating the entire blacktop mirror below the front tyre in real time so you are reading a surface that is a different colour every four seconds.

the two bachelor party guys were filming the canopy with both arms raised. threaded the shoulder gap, both elbows cleared above the grips simultaneously, they lowered their phones to find empty air. the silver robot's extended arm cleared the left grip by inches โ€” the tip bucket coin shifted from the front wheel proximity โ€” and the tourist who was photographing him accidentally filmed me instead of the robot and i hope she kept that clip. the zip-line launched and every queue member looked up for exactly one second and i went through the staircase cluster during that window.

vegas elvis's rhinestone stud caught the canopy going gold and flashed at grip level and he looked down at his cape and decided it was part of the experience. that is a professional.

the security segway wobbled once, chose not to engage, and that is the correct decision from a man who has seen everything fremont street has ever produced.

the canopy hitting full-white maximum brightness at the sequence finale with the band on the chorus and the zip-line launching above and the whole mall at peak simultaneously. that is las vegas giving you everything at once and not apologising for any of it.

tag someone who thinks fremont street is just a tourist trap. comment "GOLD FLASH" if the rhinestone stud grip hit was your moment. wait for the segway wobble and the officer's choice โ€” one wobble, full composure, correct call. double-tap if the full-white canopy finale flooding the frame got you.

the high line on a sunday afternoon in late june is not a park path. it is a compressed elevated corridor where every category of new york human has arrived simultaneously and claimed their section without consulting each other.

the yoga mat man was fully reclined diagonally across the right path half with earbuds in and eyes closed. water bottle at front-wheel height on the left. hanging legs from the low wall on the other side. threaded between them on the rail strips embedded in the concrete โ€” the same tyre-tracking commitment as cable car tracks โ€” and the hanging legs pulled back instinctively and the park staff member's face went from yoga mat assessment to something more complicated.

the double stroller bottleneck at the viewing deck connection. the sideways tourist who stopped sideways-on mid-manoeuvre. the tall grass stems at handlebar height pressing in from both sides and brushing the grip tape simultaneously in the dense planting section. the plant installation cross-member requiring an actual bar dip to clear โ€” the vine elements in their inward swing at exactly the right moment โ€” and the plaque reader's glasses sliding forward on her nose as she turned from the text.

the freight elevator opened and twelve people stepped out and one of them immediately walked backward to photograph the elevator doors and the camera bag swung into the path on the backswing and i timed it to the forward swing and they turned around and found me and they had been in the park for thirty seconds.

the hudson through the western building gap at the end. silver water. containership. new jersey in summer haze. the high line giving you the view after all of that as if it planned it.

tag someone who does the high line on sundays and thinks it's a relaxing park stroll. comment "BAR DIP" if the armature clearance made you hold your breath. wait for the plaque reader's glasses sliding โ€” that detail is the run in miniature. double-tap if the hudson river gap at the end got you. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿ—ฝ๐ŸŒŠ
