Scientists suggest that Earth’s Moon may have formed far faster than previously believed. According to computer simulations of the giant-impact theory, a massive collision with the young Earth could have thrown huge amounts of material into space, which quickly came together to form the Moon possibly within just a few hours. This challenges the older idea that the Moon slowly assembled over millions of years. The exact details are still being studied, but the idea gives us a fascinating new look at how our Moon may have been born.

Pluto has one of the longest years of any known planet or dwarf planet in our solar system, taking about 248 Earth years to complete one trip around the Sun. It was discovered in 1930, but since then, Pluto still has not completed a full orbit around the Sun. It will finally finish that first observed journey on March 23, 2178. By that time, nearly 250 years will have passed since its discovery, making Pluto’s slow journey a fascinating reminder of just how enormous our solar system really is.

Billions of years from now, Earth’s days could become much longer, possibly reaching around 30 hours. This happens because of the ongoing gravitational interaction between Earth and the Moon. The Moon’s gravity creates tides on Earth, and this interaction slowly takes energy from Earth’s rotation, causing our planet to spin a little more slowly over time. At the same time, the Moon is gradually moving farther away from Earth. These changes happen incredibly slowly, so we would never notice them during a human lifetime. Today, Earth’s day is about 24 hours, but over extremely long periods, the length of a day can continue to increase. This fascinating process shows how the Earth-Moon system is constantly changing, even though those changes are far too slow for us to see directly.

Hubble observations have revealed a strange 10-sided atmospheric pattern, or decagon, around Saturn’s south pole. The enormous structure is not a solid object, but a giant pattern of moving gases and powerful winds in Saturn’s atmosphere. Scientists believe it may have formed relatively recently, possibly between 2017 and 2023, and observations suggest the pattern has become stronger and more clearly defined over time. The discovery is especially fascinating because Saturn’s north pole is already famous for its long-lasting six-sided storm system, known as the Saturnian hexagon. Researchers are now studying the southern decagon to understand what created its unusual shape, how stable it is, and whether it will continue to grow or change.

Voyager 1 is traveling farther from Earth than any other human-made spacecraft. NASA expects its remaining power to continue declining, and sometime in the 2030s, its instruments and communications may eventually shut down. Once contact is permanently lost, Voyager 1 will continue drifting through interstellar space, but scientists will no longer be able to track its condition or learn what it encounters. Its journey could continue for thousands or even millions of years, carrying a small piece of humanity into the distant cosmos.

Your body contains an astonishing amount of DNA. If the DNA from all your cells were stretched out and placed end to end, it would reach an enormous distance far beyond anything we experience on Earth.
Even though a single strand of DNA is incredibly thin, your cells pack it tightly inside their nuclei. DNA carries the genetic instructions that help your body grow, develop, and function.
So, trillions of tiny cells are carrying an enormous amount of genetic information inside you.

Even if a spaceship could travel at the speed of light, it still could not reach the edge of the known Universe. The reason is that the Universe is expanding, and on the largest scales, space itself can expand faster than light. This means some distant regions are moving away from us so quickly that their light may never reach Earth. There is no known physical “edge” or wall of the Universe what we call the observable Universe is simply the part whose light has had time to reach us.

A massive dark region appeared across the Sun on December 2, 2023, but it wasn’t an actual hole in the Sun. It was a coronal hole, a large area in the Sun’s outer atmosphere where the plasma is cooler and less dense, making it appear dark in ultraviolet images. These regions have open magnetic-field lines that allow charged particles to escape into space as fast solar wind. When this high-speed solar wind reaches Earth, it can disturb our planet’s magnetic field and sometimes help create spectacular auroras. Despite its dramatic appearance, the coronal hole was a temporary feature caused by the Sun’s constantly changing magnetic activity.

The image is a breathtaking glimpse into the Hubble Deep Field, where a seemingly empty patch of sky was observed for about 10 days. What looked almost completely dark from Earth turned out to be filled with thousands of distant galaxies. Each tiny, faint dot can contain billions of stars, along with vast clouds of gas and dust. Because light takes so long to travel across space, many of these galaxies appear as they looked billions of years ago, allowing astronomers to study different stages of cosmic history. The original Hubble Deep Field revealed roughly 3,000 distant galaxies, while later deep-field observations revealed even more.

The Sun Isn’t Actually Yellow — It’s Really White!
The Sun may look yellow or golden from Earth, but its actual light is white. That’s because the Sun produces light across nearly the entire visible spectrum, and when all those colors mix together, our eyes see the result as white. From space, the Sun appears much closer to a brilliant white than the yellow color we often see in pictures or from Earth. Its light can appear yellow, orange, or even red when it passes through Earth’s atmosphere, especially near sunrise and sunset. The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light more strongly, changing the Sun’s apparent color. So, the familiar yellow Sun is largely an effect of Earth’s atmosphere and our viewing conditions, not the Sun’s true color.
