According to a recent report from South Korean news outlet SBS Biz, Samsung's plans for their AR and VR headset, believed to be a mixed-reality device developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, may face significant delays.
Industry insiders have revealed that Samsung has decided to completely overhaul its Extended Reality (XR) project, leading to a delay of three to six months in the schedule. This decision was reportedly influenced by the specifications of Apple's Vision Pro mixed reality headset, causing Samsung to review all internal specifications, including design and panels, of their XR product. The initial plan was to commence mass production in the first quarter of 2024.
Twitter user OreXda previously shared rumors about Samsung's response to Apple's advanced specifications for the Vision Pro headset. The pixel density of Samsung's "Galaxy XR" headset was originally intended to be 2,000 PPI but has now been upgraded to 3,000 PPI, slightly below the 3,400 PPI of the Apple Vision Pro. The production of initial samples is expected to take place in November, making a release in 2023 unlikely.
As a result of these potential changes, it remains uncertain whether Samsung will unveil the headset at the "Galaxy Unpacked" show. Samsung has confirmed that the event will take place on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. During Google's I/O keynote on May 10, Google executive Sameer Samat hinted that the operating system for Samsung's headset will be based on Android, expressing excitement about the collaboration on Immersive XR. It is expected that Qualcomm will provide the chip for the new Samsung headset.
