Photographer of the Week: Genesis Báez, an artist primarily working with photography and video.

This selection comes from the series Otra Vida, Otra Vez. Made in Puerto Rico on Báez’s return visits to her family’s homeland, Otra Vida, Otra Vez (Another Life, Another Time, or, Another Life, Again) also considers the meaning of home while living in diaspora. Báez photographed family, friends, domestic spaces and the land to trace the ways in which intimacy, care, distance, and longing often coexist. Made in Yabucoa in the years leading up to massive political and environmental shifts, the photographs also reveal the sometimes subtle yet deep ways in which US colonial power manifests in daily life, and the ways in which life moves around and beyond it.

ANNOUNCING

Capricious Photo Award Recipient
Sasha Phyars-Burgess

Capricious is pleased to announce Sasha Phyars-Burgess as recipient of the second annual Capricious Photo Award. Sasha is a vital, emerging voice in contemporary photography, engaging the charged line between documentary and fine art. Her work ranges from affecting studies on diaspora, family and place to revolving social phenomenons in which energy, beauty and power meet.

Of her practice Sasha states:

I am interested in What is seen, and the cultural connotations and markers that come with looking at bodies, particularly black ones. I use a documentary approach in order to view the domestic, the unsupervised, and the ordinary in an effort to reveal the mundane reality of lives that are often under continued supervision and oppressive state and social violence. I was born in 1988. I am a scorpio. I am black. I am Alive.

Sasha Phyars-Burgess was born in Brooklyn, New York to Trinidadian parents and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She received a BA in photography from Bard College and an MFA from Cornell University. This will be her first book.

The Capricious Photo Award was founded by Sophie Mörner and provides one photographer with the financial and editorial support to bring a body of work to fruition in book form. The 2018 jury was lead by Capricious Founder/Publisher Sophie Mörner and Senior Editor/Associate Publisher Anika Sabin, alongside Lauren Cornell (Director of the Graduate Program/Chief Curator at CCS Bard), Ka-Man Tse (Photographer/Video Artist/Educator), Matt Keegan (Visual Artist/Educator), Guadalupe Rosales (Artist/Archivist), Lyndsy Welgos (Visual Artist/Founder of Topical Cream), Katherine Hubbard (Interdisciplinary Artist/Educator) and JOFF (Associate Director of Parsons MFA Fashion Design & Society).

Photographer of the Week #177: Athena Torri

This week and through the weekend we are featuring the work of Athena Torri.

Torri's work explores connections between the human condition and the surrounding natural landscape. Each series presents a different anthropological discourse seen through the lens of the artist's personal history and their poetically charged, and traditionally photographic, aesthetic sensibility.

Athena Torri is an Ecuadorian Italian artist based in Beacon, NY. Born in Milan, Athena grew up in Quito, Ecuador before immigrating to the United States. Athena has a BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design, and a General Studies Certificate from the International Center of Photography.

Introducing Photographer of the Week Guanyu Xu!

In “One Land To Another,” Xu utilizes mirrors, eye contact with the viewer, and tight camera angles to construct a narrative that presents moments of intimacy and longing, questioning who looks and is being looked at. Introducing Photographer of the Week: Griselda San Martin

Griselda San Martin’s photographs effectively convey the dehumanizing consequences of ‘The Wall’. At its best, the fence polls are wide enough so an arm could fit through, though the United States officials prohibit touching. Touch is craved deeply, shown in the images of cracked hands pushed against the metal mesh in order for pinky fingers to touch.
