Thank you @elephantmagazine !!

🐎🐎🐎🐎

wild wild Wild West / Haunting of the Seahorse by Jonathan Lyndon Chase is a dual book of non-linear storytelling illustrating black queer bodies moving through fluid states of love, grief, and desire within the canons of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Like a love letter, Jonathan employs multi-sensory entanglements, a blending of the abstract and physical, to draw out complex histories of blackness, meditations on mental health, and queer futurity.

Jonathan Lyndon Chase is an interdisciplinary artist principally working in modes of painting, video and sculpture depicting queer black love and community amid the backdrop of urban and domestic spaces. This is their second book with Capricious Publishing—a debut book Quiet Storm was released in conjunction with Company Gallery in 2018. Chase was born in 1989 in Philadelphia, PA where they currently live and work.

Join Aperture and Printed Matter for an online conversation between Sasha Phyars-Burgess (winner of the 2021 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award for Untitled), Sonel Breslav (2021 PhotoBook Awards shortlist juror and Director of Fairs and Editions at Printed Matter), and Anika Sabin (executive director and associate publisher at Capricious, publisher of Untitled), as they discuss Phyars-Burgess’s winning book. Untitled is a beautifully crafted exploration in three series that span various sites and spaces—from striking black-and-white photographs of daily life in Trinidad, to images of dance-hall crowds, to portraits of individuals taken in the US, Canada, and England. As a first-generation American born to Trinidadian parents, Phyars-Burgess explores her heritage and its complicated history through photography.

This conversation coincides with the 2021 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards exhibition, on view at Printed Matter in New York through February 27, 2022. #sashaphyarsburgess #capriciousbooks #linkinbio

Praise for Tuesday or September or the End:

“Tuesday or September or the End puts calendar time back into messianic time, and also the reverse. An account of a disorienting year in history, in our lives, this intimate and funny and abstract fiction uses fable, and unreality, to flood a reader with the real, to remind her what is at stake.” — Rachel Kushner

Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards Exhibition - on view January 20 through February 27, 2022

Initiated in November 2012 by Aperture Foundation and Paris Photo, the awards celebrate the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography with three major categories: First PhotoBook, PhotoBook of the Year, and Photography Catalogue of the Year.

“This year’s submissions faced more than eighteen months of unprecedented production challenges in scheduling and labor, access to material, and the uncertainty of another important element in bookmaking—the ability of artists, publishers, and their collaborators to come together,” observed 2021 shortlist juror Sonel Breslav. “It’s inspiring to witness the resilience of these artists, subjects, and communities. We’ve all had to learn to adapt in order to continue our work, finding new directions along the way.”

In shortlist juror and Aperture creative director Lesley A. Martin’s assessment: “The impact of the pandemic and of the other difficulties of the past year made themselves known in the notable number of very strong, introspective projects that brought forth material grounded in the studio, as well as those drawn from archives and older bodies of work.”

“Allegory and satire, alert and conscious, Hannah Black’s Tuesday or September or the End, is an existential novel. Narrative innocence is not the engine of this work; knowledge of life in the modern is. Bird and Dog, Black’s wide awake and dreaming characters, are electric and wise. This novel is fluent in our dystopia and utopia.” — Dionne Brand

“An acid calendar of planetary rot and revolt, Hannah Black’s new novel listens for that alien language of the future: total social transformation. Staging debates on communism and social democracy, or unraveling the double helix of race and capitalism, Black’s calendar is one that breathes and breaks, figuring the temporal hiccups of revolution. Suddenly it’s no longer endless winter and our narrator Bird, much like chirping in early spring, brings us to witness the reanimation of the world.” — Greg Nissan
