After enduring a harrowing period of starvation, a dog named Collins collapsed in relief the moment he felt gentle human hands reach out to him. His frail body had suffered greatly, but in that moment, the comforting arms of his rescuers made him feel safe again.
When Collins arrived at the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA), he was a shadow of the dog he is today. Severely underweight, vomiting, and emotionally broken, he had clearly endured what the PSPCA described as “unimaginable cruelty.” Yet even then, Collins showed a powerful desire for connection. As rescuers approached him, he collapsed into their arms, seeking the love and comfort he had been denied for so long.
According to the PSPCA, Collins’ condition was critical when he arrived. Despite everything he had been through, staff quickly noticed his gentle and affectionate nature. Lindsey King, volunteer programs manager at the PSPCA, told The Dodo that Collins made it clear he needed closeness and reassurance.
“Despite what he went through, he remained the sweetest, most lovable dog,” King said.
With time, care, and patience, Collins began to regain both his strength and his joyful personality. Staff soon realized he wasn’t just surviving—he was thriving. Playful, affectionate, and full of life, Collins became a beautiful reminder that even the most broken spirits can heal when they are finally shown love.
