Sport is full of surprises, and that's the reason why we love it so much. The huge upsets are the ones that provide the biggest talking points because of the shock factor they provide. A huge sporting shock recently came ahead of the Zurich Diamond League Weltklasse, where Mondo Duplantis, a pole vault champion, set a personal best time. Man miraculously survives being swallowed by humpback whale Armand Duplantis (L) and Karsten Warholm (R) (Daniela Porcelli / by Eurasia Sport Images / Getty Images) Taking place on Wednesday (4 September), the Swede even beat Karsten Warholm in a 100m sprint. race. While that may not sound too impressive, it should be worth noting Warholm is a 400 meter world record holder. Surgeon Leonid Rogozov had been on an expedition to Antarctica when he developed acute appendicitis leaving him with a horrifying choice Kit Roberts Warning: This article contains graphic descriptions which some readers may find distressing. When becoming a doctor there are plenty of scenarios that you are trained for, not to mention the amount of learning you have to do on the job. But one surgeon found himself in the unenviable position of being the only medic in the vicinity, and then requiring emergency surgery . Leonid Rogozov had joined an expedition to Antarctica acting as the group's doctor for the trip . Gladiator 2 trailer When undertaking such an expedition, it's probably a good idea to have someone around who can tell a fibula from a tibia in case someone becomes sick. But in the case of the Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1961 the team of 12 may have wished they'd brought two doctors with them. The team had the Novolazarevskaya Station up and running by the Schirmacher Oasis in Antarctica in February 1961. But while still living in the middle of the polar wilderness the 27-year-old Rogozov began to feel weak, tired, and nauseous, before developing a pain down the right side of his abdomen. Rogozov speaking to his friend Yuri Vereschagin at Novolazarevskaya Station (Vladislav Rogozov) Any doctor worth their stethoscope can spot acute appendicitis immediately. The good news is if you're in a city or town it's an urgent but routine procedure to remove the appendix. The bad news was that the group was in Antarctica, and Rogozov was the only doctor. His son Vladislav told the BBC in 2015: "Being a surgeon, he had no difficulty in diagnosing acute appendicitis. " It was a condition he'd operated on many times, and in the civilized world it's a routine operation. But unfortunately he did not find himself in the civilized world - instead he was in the middle of a polar wasteland. " Given that acute appendicitis can lead to life-threatening conditions if not treated quickly, Rogozov was left in a horrifying position - he could either wait for help that would be unlikely to come in time, or he could attempt to perform an appendectomy on himself. To open his own abdomen, he did not know if that was humanly possible . Read More :

Peruvian loggers are reportedly encroaching on the Mascho Piro tribe's territory Callum. Jones Two people are said to have been killed and a further two injured after a confrontation with an 'uncontacted' tribe. The Mashco Piro tribe , who live in Peru's ManĂș National Park, is suspected to be the largest uncontacted tribe on the planet. The tribe is said to be made up of 750 members as of this year, with every member having zero contact with anyone outside of the massive group. Back in July, an organization that represents 39 Indigenous communities in the Cusco and Madre de Dios regions, the FederaciĂłn Nativa del RĂo Madre de Dios y Afluentes (FENAMAD), revealed a worrying incident had taken place . Gladiator 2 trailer The tribe has a LOT of members. (Survival International) It was reported the tribe launched an attack on loggers near their territory, in which one logger was injured. Since then, tensions have risen further to the point where the tribe has fatally shot two logging workers. Daniel Pena, a spokesperson of FENAMAD, told Reuters the attack took place on Thursday (29 August) in the Madre de Dios region. Workers had reportedly been opening a trail in the forest when the Mashco Piro tribe launched their attack. At least two workers have been killed, while a further two are apparently injured and missing. The attack took place just one day before the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) suspended the certification for a logging company to work in close proximately to the tribe for a period of eight months, the Guardian reports. Vice-president of FENAMAD, Eusebio RĂos, said: "There are people wounded, dead, missing - we do not know what's happening or what has happened. " FENAMAD has been demanding for a long time that this territory be properly protected for uncontacted. peoples. " Meanwhile Caroline Pearce, executive director of Survival International, a human rights organization campaigning for Indigenous people, said in a statement:" This is a tragedy that was entirely avoidable. The Peruvian authorities have known for years that this area that they chose to sell off for logging was actually the Mashco Piro's territory. The group were spotted dangerously close to loggers in July. (Survival International) Read More :

NASA astronaut Ronald Garan has orbited Earth 2,842 times during which he experienced the 'Overview Effect'

We're all 'living a lie', according to an astronaut that hurtled through space for a whopping 178 days.

I'm sure if we all spent that many days orbiting Earth at a speed of around 17,500mph then the way we see things would drastically change.

Well, it certainly did for the former NASA spaceman Ronald Garan who orbited our planet a staggering 2,842 times as he toured global shuttles - including the International Space Station (ISS).

Speaking to Big Think, he said: "When we see our planet from the perspective of space, certain things become undeniably clear. Read More :

As a wise wizard once said, 'You shall not pass!' Yasmeen Hamadeh It's practically impossible to imagine another actor playing the role of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, and apparently, Sir Ian McKellen is in agreement. The 85-year-old actor made history in Peter Jackson's legendary trilogy, and its subsequent spin-offs, where he played a wise wizard audiences have come to know and love as Gandalf the Gray (or technically the White if we want to be a little more accurate). From the original trilogy to the Hobbit prequels, McKellen has played Gandalf time and time again to absolute perfection and has achieved what can only be considered every actor's dream in making and originating a character that is completely his. So much so, that he's perhaps made the task of another actor stepping into his wizardry shoes almost impossible. Sir Ian McKellen gave a powerhouse performance as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. (New Line / WireImage) In fact, the actor is completely aware of it, succinctly telling the BBC Breakfast: "I'm not letting anyone else put on the pointy hat and beard if I can help it." We have no notes. None whatsoever. In his conversation with the BBC, McKellen was referencing an upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel film titled The Hunt for Gollum. Due to be released in 2026, Andy Serkis is slated to not only reprise the iconic titular role but is also set to direct the film. Sir Ian hopes to return as Gandalf in upcoming projects. Read More:

Raygun received the lowest score possible at the Olympics this year Joe Yates In 'the interview everyone wants', Olympics star Raygun will finally speak out and explain to the world just why she is Australia's best breakdancer. At the Paris 2024 Olympics it was the first time fans were blessed to see breakdancing introduced as a sport at the Games ... and it did not disappoint, thanks to Dr Rachael Gunn - aka Raygun. Raygun's Olympic qualifier leaves people divided Credits: Sky News Australia 0 seconds of 1 minute, 16 secondsVolume 90% No, she did not pick up her doctorate in the sport but as a lecturer in the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature at Macquarie University Faculty of Arts, Sydney. Her performance was hailed as 'hilariously ridiculous' by viewers and the Australian competitor went on to receive a score of zero from the judges . One of those on the panel has since spoken out about her trailblazing showing - which would have been a hard act to follow in terms of the crowd getting behind her. Breakdancing judge MGbility told News Corp: "I feel personally very sorry. The breaking and hip hop community definitely stands behind her. " She was just trying to bring something new, something original and something that represents her country. "We stay with her. Just her level was maybe not as high as the other competitors." Raygun received zero marks for her Olympic performance. (Ezra Shaw / Getty Images) Adding: "Again, we're using a comparative judging system. Her competitors were just better but it does not mean that she did really bad. She did her best." Raygun went viral for her original performance and the 37-year-old is set to speak later today (September 4) on Australia's Channel 10 in a tell-all interview.
